Owner of new Wichita doughnut shop giving customers a Sugar Rush

Michael Whitener was tired of having to drive all the way to Wichita to get his Winchell’s fix.

So he decided to open his own doughnut shop near his house in Andover. He bought all the equipment and was looking for a space when Dunkin’ Donuts announced it was opening in Andover.

So Whitener, who also has a full-time job at Spirit, decided to open his shop in Wichita instead. Last month, he and his wife, Chasity, launched Sugar Rush Donut and Bakery in the former Elvita’s Mexican Restaurant space at 3835 S. Seneca.

Whitener is making the type of doughnuts he’s always loved at Winchell’s – cake doughnuts, raised doughnuts and apple fritters among them. The shop is earning a reputation for its apple fritters.

“I’ve gotten a lot of positive feedback from people in the neighborhood,” he said. “There are not too many doughnut shops in that area.”

For now, Whitener is opening only three days a week – from 6 a.m. to 3 p.m. Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. His days off from Spirit are Saturday and Sunday, and he works a double shift on Fridays. He’s thinking about opening on Mondays in the future.
