Sweet new event aims to find Wichita’s best cupcake

Do you have what it takes to bake Wichita’s best cupcake?

Calling all cupcake bakers.

Calling all cupcake eaters.

CityArts is putting on a sweet new fundraiser on Aug. 5, and it’s centered around everyone’s favorite individual dessert: the cupcake.

Organizers of The CityArts Cupcake Challenge are now looking for both professional and home bakers to compete in three categories: professional (for those who make cupcakes as a business or for profit); novice (for home bakers); and specialty (for anyone, novice or professional, who can produce good vegan or gluten-free cupcakes.) Entrants will pay a $25 fee, bake away and be eligible for notoriety and prizes, including a ceramic cupcake handmade by local artists.

They’re also looking for cupcake fans who want to come to the event, which happens from noon to 3 p.m. at the main gallery. 334 N. Mead. A $10 ticket will get them samples of the 40 entered cupcakes and a chance to vote for their favorite. The event will also include arts and crafts.

I have selflessly agreed to be a judge for this contest, and although I’ve never sampled 40 cupcakes at once, I’m certain I’m up to the challenge.

Want to enter? Call 316-350-3245 to pay the $25 entry fee using Visa or Mastercard. Checks made payable to The Arts Council also can be mailed to CityArts, 334 N. Mead, Wichita, KS, 67202) or dropped off at the front desk. Put "Cupcake Challenge" in the memo line. The deadline for entry is July 7.

What to attend? The $10 tickets are available at the above number, or you can reserve your tickets by stopping by CityArts.
