The Taqueria El Paisa building at 2227 N. Arkansas has been vacant for not quite two weeks, but it’s already getting a new tenant. And the owners have familiar faces.
Manuel Salas, who has had Egg Cetera at 242 N. Mosley in Old Town since he bought it from Melad Stephan in 2011, plans to open a new Tex-Mex restaurant in the space in about two weeks. He’ll call it Casa Del Charro.
Salas’ son, Ethan, said the family had been wanting to expand its business and had considered opening a second Egg Cetera on the west side, but the deal fell through. When the Taqueria El Paisa building came open, they saw their chance.
The menu hasn’t been completed yet, Ethan Salas said, but the new restaurant will serve lunch and dinner.

“I feel like we are pretty limited with the space that’s here,” he said of Egg Cetera, which has room for only about 50 people. “We’re limited in how many people we can seat.”
The new space seats about 180, he said.
Egg Cetera will remain open, too.
Taqueria El Paisa closed on Aug. 28 after 18 years in business. Owner Concepcion Acosta wanted to retire and has plans to help her son, Christian Nunez, open his new food business in the new Union Station canopies.
I’ll update you when the Salas family chooses an opening date.
