What was up with Toby Keith at El Dorado’s Dam Music Festival?
Did Toby Keith drink a little too much from the red Solo cup at El Dorado Lake?
That’s the question local social media has been buzzing about ever since the country star’s headlining performance at the Dam Music Festival last Saturday.
Keith was the featured act for the second-year festival, which also brought in country star Brantley Gilbert, among others, on Friday night.
But throughout Keith’s performance, fans noticed something was off: The singer appeared to slur his words and generally act inebriated.
But could that have just been Keith’s schtick?
Keith’s manager, T.K. Kimbrell, denies that the singer was intoxicated at the Dam Music Fest.
“He was cutting up and carrying on just like normal,” Kimbrell said in an emailed statement. “Colt Ford and Jamey Johnson both got up and sat in with him. Toby was having a good time as was everyone in the crowd.”
Reviews of the performance on social media were mixed.
“Toby had several red Solo cups too many,” one Facebook commenter wrote on the Dam Music Festival page. “Could not even sing his lyrics. Mumbled the words. A waste of talent.”
“Toby was so drunk he couldn’t stop dropping F-bombs enough to sing his songs right,” another commenter wrote.
Others said whatever was going on with Keith made the concert, which largely took place between 10 p.m. and midnight, more enjoyable.
“Toby Keith is great on stage. Might have been a little trashed but I had more fun then,” one commenter wrote.
Video footage of the concert shows Keith mixing up the lyrics of his song “I Love This Bar” as well as speeding through the opening of “Red Solo Cup.”
A concert attendee said Keith frequently sipped from a bottle near the back of the stage — in addition to his Solo cup — throughout the show.
At the finale of the concert, Keith invited veterans in attendance onto the stage for his performance of “Courtesy of the Red, White and Blue.” In a video of the performance, Keith appears to attempt to pinch fellow country singer — and Marine veteran — Jamey Johnson on the rear end.
Dam Music Festival organizers have not made any statement on Keith’s performance.
Keith is currently touring across the country as part of his Should Have Been a Cowboy Tour.
