The Kansas State Fair, Sept. 5-14, promises plenty of fun and fried foods, but there are several activities going on closer to home:

1. “#Selfie”: The Oxford dictionaries named “selfie” the 2013 word of year, and it’s no wonder. Social media pages are swimming with self-taken snapshots. While today we call them “selfies,” artists throughout history called them “self-portraits.” The Wichita Art Museum, 1400 W. Museum Blvd., takes a look at the phenomenon through 20 self-portraits from its permanent collection. Visitors can contribute their own selfies, which will then be displayed in digital frames. Through Feb. 8. 10 a.m to 5 p.m. Tue.-Sat.; noon to 5 p.m. Sun. $7 for adults, $3 for ages 5-17; ages under 5 get in free; free admission on Saturdays. www.wichitaartmuseum.org

2. Race for Freedom 5K Run/Walk: This annual races benefits ICT S.O.S. Race time is 8:30 a.m. Saturday at Carpenter Place, 1501 N. Meridian. Runners can cruise the flat course through the Indian Hills area, and then enjoy a pancake breakfast (free for participants, $5 for everyone else). The $1,000 prize money will divided among the top winners in each category. Funds will go toward updating the Youthville Secure Care facility and bolstering the therapeutic programming. $35 for on-site registration. www.gorunyourrace.com/Event/Event/42.

3. ICT Fest: The 10th annual music festival continues at Parker’s Grotto, 123 N. Sycamore in Delano. The musical fest, which began Thursday, showcases over 40 bands, who will be playing everything from rock to hip-hop. On Friday, the music starts at 5 p.m., with a new band playing every half-hour. On Saturday, performances start at 4 p.m. Tickets are $12 per day or $20 for the weekend. http://ictfest.com

4. Reverend Horton Heat at the Brickyard: The band brings its “psychobilly” music to Wichita at 8 p.m. Sunday. Their music is a mix of rock, blues, country, punk and swing. The 21-and-over show at the Brickyard, 129 N. Rock Island, costs $15 at the door. www.brickyardoldtown.com; 316-263-4044.

5. Lyle Lovett & His Large Band: The Grammy-winning singer and actor will bring his trademark cross-genre music and storytelling to the Orpheum at 7:30 p.m. Sunday. Lovett infuses elements of country, swing, jazz, gospel and even blues into his music. Doors at the Orpheum, 200 N. Broadway, open at 6:30 p.m. $60, $65, $69. selectaseat.com, 1-855-755-7328.4.

6. Eli Young Band: The Grammy-nominated country band makes a stop at the Cotillion, 11120 W. Kellogg, at 8 p.m. Wednesday. The band is known for hits such as “Crazy Girl,” and “Even If It Breaks Your Heart.” Tickets for the all-ages show are $26.50-$30. Call 316-722-4201 or visit www.thecotillion.com.
