Share the Season: Woman with rotator cuff injury has no insurance
Share the Season is an annual campaign that offers one-time aid to people affected by unforeseen hardships. The people are not identified to protect their privacy.
The 50-year-old woman does not have health insurance.
She suffers from a rotator cuff injury and has been unable to work since July 22. Her car’s power steering pump has gone out and it is need of tires. She has slipped behind in paying bills.
“I have applied for disability but have been denied,” she told The Eagle. “I hurt myself at home while taking a bath. I got out and something popped in my shoulder. It is just one of those things of getting old.”
The woman has requested help in paying her utilities and buying food.
“I have had a job most of the time in my life,” she wrote on her application to Share the Season. “Seems like life wants me to struggle … I have always had jobs that require repetitive movement of the arms. We have been unable without any insurance for me to get x-rays, MRI, surgeon opinion. I had my first steroid shot – $600 out of pocket just in the last five months.”
The woman said she has never asked for help before.
“I was making the minimum wage with kids at home, couldn’t get assistance,” she wrote.
Share the Season is a joint project of The Eagle, the Wichita Community Foundation and the Salvation Army.
So far this season, it has raised $103,641.
