Share the Season: Paying bills a struggle after multiple surgeries, wreck

Share the Season is an annual campaign that offers one-time aid to people affected by unforeseen hardships. The people are not identified to protect their privacy.

On his application, the 50-year-old man wrote that his family has struggled for some time.

He broke his back in 2007 and then had back surgery. In the next two years, he had surgery on his right knee and then his left ankle.

In 2013, the family’s 2002 van was rear-ended; the family has replaced that with a 1990 van, which had to have $1,300 worth of work.

The couple have two children, ages 12 and 9.

The family owes money on property taxes, a loan and utilities.

“I have canceled life insurance on wife and kids, also medical insurance,” the man wrote.

The family declared bankruptcy in 2010.

“This help would get us back on track, start the New Year out on a positive note, and a clean slate,” he wrote on the application. “I have picked up a couple of side jobs and scrap metal to try and help out.”

Share the Season is a joint project of The Eagle, the Wichita Community Foundation and the Salvation Army. So far this season, it has raised more than $151,000.
