Family-friendly fare
Kids’ Halloween at the Museum of World Treasures, 835 E. First St., 6 to 9 p.m. Friday, Oct. 22. The first floor of this museum — which already displays mummies — will be transformed with spooky, family-friendly displays. Costumes welcomed, candy provided. Admission: $6. Residential displays. Lighted singing jack-o-lanterns, thousands of flashing and pulsing lights and other Halloween props and décor are part of a special residential light display that’s available to see 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. through Nov. 1 at 6726 W. Ocieo. It’s also fun (and free) to check out the creative Halloween decorations in the College Hill neighborhood; be sure to check out the Martian spaceship that’s landed in the 300 block of North Belmont.

Boo’reakfast at Exploration Place, 300 N. McLean. Four seating times start at 8 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 23, and three times start at 9 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 24. Dinosaurs after Dark at Field Station Dinosaurs, 2999 N. Rock Road, Derby, 7 to 9 p.m. Friday and Saturday nights until the end of October. Visitors will encounter some recognizable movie monsters on a darkened trail while trying to find the source of paranormal activity happening at the Field Station. Boo at the Zoo at Sedgwick County Zoo, 5555 W. Zoo Blvd., 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 23 and 24. Hay, Hooves and Halloween at Old Cowtown Museum, 1865 Museum Blvd., 2 to 8 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 23 and 24. The headless horseman rides the living history museum’s streets, zombie cowboys have an undead gunfight and ghosts haunt the historic houses in a family-friendly environment. Kids in costume can walk the stage during any of the pig race times and trick or treat around the farm. Parents can enter their child’s name into a drawing for a quilt. Halloween festival for dogs and cats, north parking lot of Towne West Mall, 4600 W. Kellogg Drive, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 31. The Wichita Animal Action League hosts its second fall festival for pets, with a costume contest and prizes for canines and felines, a bake sale, photo booth and other activities. Live and special events
Living Wax Museum at Monikahouse, 1121 N. Bitting, 7 to 10 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays through the end of October. Madame Marie Tussaud herself — played by local artist and event organizer Monika Stockton Maddux — will greet you in the foyer of this 1887 Victorian venue where you’ll encounter a living exhibition of local artists who are recreating known people — some living, some dead, but all in artistic costumes and vignettes. It’s a fun, safe, all-ages show, said Maddux. Tickets: $10 suggested donation, youth 18 and under free when accompanied by an adult for exhibition entry. Special events include ghost portraits on Friday nights (three poses for $15) and concerts at 9 p.m. Oct. 22 and 23. “Halloween: The Melodrama,” Mosley Street Melodrama, 234 N. Mosley. If you plan to see this melodrama, act fast since most performances over the next two weekends are sold out. The parody of the “Halloween” classic horror film is followed by a vaudeville/musical revue by the Silver Screen Slashers. Murder mystery performances. Enjoy a good Agatha Christie or Sherlock Holmes mystery? “Rocky Horror Show” The Crown Uptown, 3207 E. Douglas, is putting on its annual production of the stage musical several times between now and the end of October. “Rocky Horror Picture Show” The Orpheum Theatre, 200 N. It’s no secret that Old Cowtown may be inhabited by a few ghosts, but for extra measure, nine different scare areas will be set up throughout the 1870s historic town for this adults-only event. Klausmeyer Farm Haunted Package, 8135 S. 119th St. West, Clearwater, 7 to 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday, through Oct. 30. The $20 haunted package includes 100 paintballs with a ride on the Zombie Paintball Trailer, Barn of Fear and the Corn Maze. The Haunted Cannery, 10001 NW U.S. 77 near El Dorado (at Walter’s Pumpkin Patch), 8 to 11 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays until the end of October. Ride under the cover of darkness and a covered hayride to end up at an abandoned four-story Haunted Cannery elevator and Lunatic Asylum. Expect chainsaws, clowns, spiders, vampires and more. Visitors can also opt to arrive in a “hell-bound” ambulance with a special RIP ticket. Admission includes the hayride, the Haunted Cannery and the Lunatic Asylum attractions. Field of Screams and Clown Town, Prairie Pines, 4055 N. Tyler Road, Maize. Gates open at 7 p.m. Fridays through Sundays until the end of October. The storyline for this attraction is that you’ll experience the haunted, sick fields of the Spurlock family where infamous vigilante murders took place. Ghastly clowns, chaotic mazes and 3D effects happen in the sinister Clown Town. Limited, timed tickets are sold online only at scaryprairiepines.com. Wicked Island at OJ Watson Park, 3022 S. McLean, 8 p.m. to midnight, Fridays and Saturdays through the end of October (weather permitting). Ticket sales start at 7:30 p.m. and park gates close at 11:30 p.m. Plan for a 30-minute trek in this long-running haunted attraction put on by Plant Kingdom and the city of Wichita. Admission: $25 for adults and $20 for children 12 and under (must be accompanied by an adult) for timed tickets purchased online, $35 for a fast pass to the head of the line.
