Fireworks go on sale Saturday in Wichita. Here’s what you should know
Fireworks sales in Wichita start Saturday and run through July 5.
Inside Wichita city limits, there remains a ban on fireworks that shoot over 6 feet and lighting anything described as containing “flaming balls,” Wichita fire Capt. Jose Ocadiz said Thursday.
Fireworks can be set off from 10 a.m. to midnight Saturday through July 5.
Additionally, a non-emergency line for fireworks and noise complaints will be available in Sedgwick County from 6 p.m. to 3 a.m. July 1-5 at 316-290-1011. The non-emergency line is meant to keep from overwhelming the 911 system during times of expected high calls. Firework and noise complaints outside of the non-emergency line hours should be made to 911.
Wichita fire and police will also have additional enforcement for fireworks on July 3 and 4.
Ocadiz said they haven’t received any complaints yet but have had calls from people in areas where lots of fireworks have been shot in the past, asking them to monitor the situation.
Violators can receive a $250 ticket and adults can be ticketed for their children violating the ordinance. Property owners and occupants can also be fined for violations on their property. The entire ordinance can be found at wichita.gov/Fireworks.
Ocadiz said to wet down used fireworks and put them on the side of the street at the end of the driveway overnight before putting them in a trashcan.
“We have had incidents in the past that we have had fires because of improper disposal,” Ocadiz said.
