Share the Season helps family struggling with cancer

Share the Season is an annual campaign that offers one-time aid to people affected by unforeseen hardships. The people are not identified to protect their privacy.

When she put in an application to Share the Season, this 43-year-old Wichita woman didn’t have a lot of hope.

“We weren’t expecting to get picked,” she said, “because there are so many people who sign up. There are so many who need help.”

That included her household of four people, including her daughter, son-in-law and 4-year-old grandson.

Her son-in-law has had cancer surgery twice and a heart attack over the past year. He is unable to work.

She also has thyroid cancer.

“I hate going to the doctors,” she said, “but I guess I’ll have to go. It’s so expensive.”

Despite her concerns, Share the Season gave the family a financial boost.

Her daughter now should be able to go back to school to continue training for a better job, she said.

“We’re very grateful,” she said. “That was so nice of them.”

Share the Season is a joint project of The Eagle, the Wichita Community Foundation and the Salvation Army.

So far this season, it has raised more than $135,973.
