Sculpture garden in Sedgwick County Park gets new name

A planned sculpture garden in Sedgwick County Park has been officially renamed.

The five acres near the 13th Street entrance that will one day be home to five large-scale environmental art projects will now be called the Sedgwick County Art Walk.

A previous name for the development — which is entirely privately funded — had upset the owners of The Art Park, a collection of arts-related businesses near 29th and Rock.

The project was renamed to avoid confusion with the east-side Art Park.

The artists responsible for the Sedgwick County Art Walk are actively seeking donations to help complete artwork in the park, which is expected to be filled with interactive sculptures.

All donations are to be made out to the Wichita Arts Council, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization.

Artists plan on installing 25-foot inukshuks overlooking 13th Street, as well as a Cor-Ten steel “fossil fish” and a collection of life-size buffalo sculptures out of Flint Hills limestone.
