Miss out on prom? Wichita party offers a prom re-do for adults
Did your senior prom not end up exactly how you’d have liked it to?
Maybe you and your date are no longer on speaking terms. Maybe you caught a bad cold the night before and had to cancel. Or maybe you had an unfortunate run-in with the punch bowl.
Now, thanks to KANSEL, you’ll get a second chance.
The nonprofit, which focuses on adult education, is hosting a formal “Prom of the Ages – Adult Prom Party” at the Kansas Star Arena on Feb. 24.
While many charity fundraisers often require expensive tickets, Thomas Montiel, executive director of KANSEL, said the organization has tried to make this event as inclusive as possible. Tickets start at $30.
“The oldest ticket-purchaser so far has been 72 and the youngest has been 21,” he said. “We have new kids coming out of college all the way up to people who’ve never even thought about high school in several decades all the in same room.”
Guests are encouraged to dress formally, but outfits from different decades are welcome, Montiel said. Similarly, the music at the prom – which is being hosted by DJ Carbon – will include pop songs from a variety of decades as well.
There will be photographers throughout the evening, who – for a slight fee – can take traditional posed prom photos, which are then printed on site.
Montiel said he expects the event will eclipse 1,000 guests, judging by ticket sales so far.
On Facebook, more than 5,000 people have expressed interest in the event, with an additional 676 saying they would be attending.
Tickets were still available as of Wednesday afternoon.
