It’s fair to say Avenue Art Days has grown quite a bit since it was first launched as a passion project two years ago.

Throughout the Douglas Design District – along Douglas from Oliver to Washington – you’ll see no shortage of murals and other artistic flourishes decorating bricks.

Now, 21 new murals will soon hit the scene along Douglas.

The murals won’t be painted until late September, but if you want a sneak peek, Avenue Art Days is hosting a launch party Tuesday to reveal artists, locations and mural designs.

This year, there were more than 40 artist submissions, according to Janelle King, owner of The Workroom and organizer of Avenue Art Days.

“It’s like a Rubik’s Cube,” she said of sifting through artist applications.

Avenue Art Days – which launched in October 2015 – is a weekend event where artists paint murals on participating businesses in the Douglas Design District. Some of Wichita’s most popular murals are products of Avenue Art Days.

After hosting two Avenue Art Days events last year, organizers decided to cut it to one per year, King said. By doing so, the organization has grown “more effective,” she said.

One major example: Avenue Art Days has garnered corporate sponsorship now.

The launch party Tuesday is sponsored by Intrust Bank, and Fidelity Bank is the title sponsor of Avenue Art Days in September.

At the party, there will be a live auction to sponsor the murals. That money will go toward paying for supplies, feeding the artists, buying T-shirts and other promotional expenses, King said.
