‘Wicked’ coming back to Wichita for two-week run
Something “Wicked” this way comes again: The Broadway hit musical will be back in Wichita for a two-week run in October, Theater League has announced.
“Dirty Dancing,” “Once,” a Broadway Christmas show and “Stomp” are also coming to town for the 2016-2017 season of Theater League’s Broadway in Wichita Series.
The productions are national Broadway tours that will be staged at Century II Concert Hall, and orders for season tickets are being taken now. Individual tickets will be available in the summer. Season tickets range from $115 to $285 for four shows. “Stomp” is a fifth show that can be swapped out for one of the other shows in a season-ticket pack.
“Wicked,” a story of the witches of Oz, was last in Wichita for Theater League’s 2009-2010 season. “Stomp” was here in 2013. The three other shows will be making their Wichita debuts.
Here’s a rundown of the shows and the dates of their Wichita appearances in chronological order:
“Wicked,” Oct. 12-23: This is the untold story — long before Dorothy came along — of how two unlikely friends become the Wicked Witch of the West and Glinda the Good.
“Broadway Christmas Wonderland,” Dec. 20-22: Santa and his helpers lead a nostalgic journey that includes Christmas songs ranging from “White Christmas” to “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree” as well as glittering costumes and high-kicking chorus girls in a show for the family.
“Once,” March 21-23, 2017: A winner of eight 2012 Tony Awards including Best Musical, this musical features actor/musicians who play the score on stage, telling the story of a Dublin street musician who is about to give up his dream until a beautiful young woman takes an interest in his haunting love songs.
“Dirty Dancing — The Classic Story on Stage,” April 18-20, 2017: This is the stage version of the movie about 17-year-old Baby’s entry into the racy dance scene of a resort where she’s on vacation with her family. It includes the hit songs “Hungry Eyes” and “(I’ve Had) the Time of My Life.”
“Stomp,” May 3 and 4, 2017: Percussion is delivered through everyday items used as musical instruments in a program of music, comedy and dance.
