‘Upon a Midnight Dreary,’ jazz meets Broadway, art on Porter Street
“Upon a Midnight Dreary”
Dinner theater in the gardens of a bed-and-breakfast inn around fire pits with wine and a costumed audience is on tap for Thursday, Oct. 23 and Oct. 24 as the new John Henry Theater Co. presents “Upon a Midnight Dreary.” Rudy Love Jr. will star in the original work by Jamie Rhodes of Newton, who started the theater company to showcase works by area writers. Some audience participation and an element of improv will be part of the evening at the Serenity Bed and Breakfast at 1018 N. Market. Tickets are $35 if ordered by Sunday or $39.95 after at eventbrite.com or 316-266-4666. Dinner is included. Doors open at 6 p.m., dinner is served at 6:30, and the show starts around 7:15. Costumes are encouraged; prizes will be given.
Jazz meets Broadway
Friends University Jazz Ensemble I and the Friends University Jazz Vocal Ensemble will team up Tuesday evening to perform jazz standards from the Broadway stage. The music will include “West Side Story Suite” from the library of Buddy Rich and arrangements from “The Stage Door Swings” by Stan Kenton. The concert will be at 7:30 p.m. in Sebits Auditorium in the Riney Fine Arts Center on the Friends campus. Tickets are $9, $6 for seniors and students, at the door or by calling 316-295-5677.
Porter Street artists
The fall edition of Porter Street Artists and Friends will be from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday. More than 20 Riverside artists and their friends will have their creations for sale in the 900 block of North Porter, radiating out from 941 N. Porter. A food truck and live music will be part of the event. Admission is free.
