WAM birthday bash, Ulrich artist talk, printmaking show
WAM’s 80th birthday
The Wichita Art Museum will celebrate its 80th birthday with free ice cream, music by the WSU Steel Drum Band and a community art project from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday. Admission to the museum is free, as it always is on Saturdays.
Artist talk: ‘On the Grid’
Works by Dutch photographer Gerco de Ruijter, the Ulrich Underground artist-in-residence for 2015, will be on view Saturday through Sept. 13 at the WSU art museum. And there will be a reception for him and a talk by him Thursday evening. The reception, which will include refreshments, will be at 5:30 p.m. at the Ulrich, and the artist’s talk will be at 6 p.m. in Room 210 of the McKnight Art Center. Admission is free. De Ruijter will talk about aerial photography and how the view from above relates to abstract art. While in Kansas, he will look at the human imprint on the rural landscape, including the grid corrections that were made along county boundaries to be sure that plots were of equal size when the land was originally sold.
Printmaking exhibition
A reception from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday will kick off the 2015 National Printmaking Exhibition at the Wichita Center for the Arts. Gordon Sherman, an art professor at Fort Hays State University, has chosen 71 works by 39 artists in a range of techniques and approaches for the exhibition, which runs through Aug. 16. Sherman will be at the reception, which will include light hors d’oeuvres and a cash bar. The center’s gallery, at 9112 E. Central, is open from 1 to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday, and admission is free.
