Show-within-a-show is favorite for Kechi Playhouse, will kick off 40th season
Kicking off its 40th season, Kechi Playhouse is bringing back what it calls a fan favorite, “Play On!,” opening this weekend.
The comedy — previously staged in 1987, 1993, 2004 and 2013 — is a play-within-a-play, where anything that can go wrong does.
“Most of the complications arise from the fact that the play-within-a-play is literally being written,” cast member Heather Johnson said. “The author keeps making changes up until three days before the show. That’s where a lot of the confusion arises. Basically, the antagonist is the playwright herself.”
The first act is set three days before dress rehearsal, the second is the night of dress rehearsal, and the third act is opening night.
Almost all of the actors in the 10-member cast play actors playing roles in the play.
Andrew Johnson, one of the actors, says the script hits home for the performers.
“There are definitely moments we’ve experienced first-hand,” he said. “There are a lot of the classic theater gags.”
Even if someone hasn’t stepped foot on stage, cast member Anna Bohr says, the material is relatable.
“It will give everyone an insight in what goes on behind the scenes,” she said. “And all of the jokes are so on-the-nose that everyone will enjoy it.”
Directed by Misty Maynard, the cast also includes Hannah Smith, Aidan Smith, Mary Tush Green, Dawn DeProspo, Glenn Williams, Brayden LaBrue-Layman and Laurie Mulford.
