Cuban all-star jazz

The Cuban All-Stars Maqueque, an all-female jazz sextet put together by Canadian jazz saxophonist Jane Bunnett, will make Friends University a stop on its tour. The group will play at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday in the Riney Fine Arts Center’s Sebits Auditorium. The group’s music, showcased on a CD released in May, is a blend of Cuban and folkloric rhythms. Tickets are $9 for adults, $6 for seniors and students. They’re available at friends.edu/finearts or by calling 316-295-5677.

Jennifer Ray photo talk

The Clayton Staples Gallery at Wichita State University’s McKnight Art Center is hosting an exhibit featuring photographs by Jennifer Ray, the school’s new professor of photography, that will run through Oct. 3. As part of the exhibit, Ray will put on an artist’s talk from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. Thursday followed by a reception from 4 to 6 p.m. For more information, call 316-978-7706.

Halloween show at Mosley Street Melodrama

Mosley Street Melodrama has just opened its Halloween musical comedy revue, and it’s full of familiar frights. “Halloween 13 or Jason is Really Hacked,” written and directed by local theater regular Tom Frye, opened Thursday and will run through Nov. 1. It’s a spoof on the classic scary movie genre and includes a camp setting, mysterious counselors and more. Shows are every Thursday, Friday and Saturday with doors opening at 6 p.m. and the show at 7:50 p.m. A catered barbecue dinner by Pig In Pig Out will be served from 6:15 to 7:30 p.m. Tickets that include dinner are $28, and a show-only ticket is $18. For tickets and information, call 316-263-0222 or visit www.mosleystreet.com/.
