Arts events: WSU jazz faculty, Literary Festival, Matfield Green art

WSU Jazz Faculty Ensemble

The William Flynn Quintet will be playing the music of Radiohead, Oasis, Jewel, Smashing Pumpkins and Nine Inch Nails in a free concert at 7 p.m. on Friday at the Shift Space gallery downtown. Part of the quintet is made up of Wichita State jazz faculty, and they’ll be performing at Wichita State’s student gallery, 416 S. Commerce St., from 1 to 2 p.m. on Friday. The First Friday music event is for all ages.

Science! and fiction

Science-fiction writer Elizabeth Hand will give the keynote talk at the 16th Literary Festival at Newman University from Thursday through April 11. “Science and Literature” is the theme of the free festival, which includes creative presentations and literary explorations. Hand’s talk, “‘Bellerophon’ and the Science of Crypto-Aviation,” will be at 7 p.m. Thursday; she’ll also be part of a round-table science-fiction discussion at 4 p.m. Friday. The DeVeils will perform at 9 p.m. Friday at the Space Prom party. All three events will be in the DiMattias Fine Arts Center, 3100 McCormick. Matfield Green art openings

Matfield Green’s art galleries open for the season Saturday with contemporary-art exhibits by Mariana Escribano and Ann Resnick of Wichita and Adri Luna of Kansas City, Mo. The Gallery at Pioneer Bluffs, in the 1909 house of the old Rogler Ranch at 695 K-177, will host “Home” by Mexico City native Escribano and “The Richness of Life” by New York native Resnick. An opening reception will be from 2 to 5 p.m. April 18. The Bank, on the west side of K-177 in town, will feature California native Luna’s “Bloom” — multimedia works on flowers and spring, with an opening reception from 2 to 5 p.m. Saturday. The three shows can be seen for free from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays through May 31.
