Arts events (Feb. 20): new woodblock print exhibit, ‘Wizard of Oz’
Prairie Print Maker exhibit
A new exhibit opens at the Wichita Art Museum on Saturday: color block prints on paper by Norma Bassett Hall – the first one-woman exhibition of her work since her death in 1957. “Chipping the Block, Painting the Silk” features the work of the only woman among the founders of the Prairie Print Makers back in 1930 when she and her husband lived in El Dorado. The exhibit will be open through July 12. Hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and noon to 5 p.m. Sunday. Museum admission is $7, $5 for seniors, $3 for students and youth ages 5 to 17, and free on Saturdays.
A young ‘Wizard of Oz’
Area youths ages 7 to 18 will perform in Music Theatre for Young People’s production of “The Wizard of Oz” this weekend at the Mary Jane Teall Theater at Century II, 225 W. Douglas. Performances of the musical will be at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 2:30 p.m. Sunday. Tickets are $12 in advance and $15 at the door, $10 for students and groups. Film Friday
The comedy-drama “Strawberry and Chocolate” portraying 1979 Cuba will be shown at 7 p.m. Friday at the WSU Shift Space Student Art Gallery, 416 S. Commerce, Suite 102. The plot: David, an idealistic young communist, conspires to be friends with flamboyant gay artist Diego so he can monitor the artist’s subversive life for the state; rated R. Popcorn will be available; bring your own drinks and chair.
