11 fun things to do in the Wichita area this weekend (July 2-4, 2016)
It’s a three-day Fourth of July weekend. Here are some of the things going on Saturday, Sunday and Monday in the Wichita area. Most of them are free.
Saturdays at Naftzger Park-Chalk Art for ages 6 to 12, 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, 688 E. William (Douglas and St. Francis); free.
“9/11 Never Forget” mobile exhibit, 2 to 8 p.m. Saturday through Tuesday, free hot dogs noon to 2 p.m. Monday while supplies last, Kansas Star Casino, 777 Kansas Star Drive, off I-35 at Exit 33, Mulvane; free; 316-719-5000, kansasstarcasino.com.
“1776,” presented by Wichita Scottish Rite Signature Theatre, 8 p.m. Saturday and 7 p.m. Sunday, 332 E. First St.; $10 to $18; www.selectaseat.com.
Celebrate America, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, at Old Cowtown Museum, 1865 Museum Blvd. Admission is $5.50-$7.75 for ages 4 and up, free for active-duty and retired military and their dependents. A cast of costumed interpreters will show what life was like just off the Chisholm Trail during the 1865-1880 time frame. There will be carnival games, sack races, a petting zoo and other activities. Wagon rides will be available from noon to 3 p.m., an anvil shooting occurs at 12:45 and 4 p.m., a gunfight will be staged at 3 p.m. and there’s free ice cream at 4:30 p.m.
College Hill pool Take a free dip in the pool on the Fourth. College Hill pool, 304 Circle Drive, is open from 1-7 p.m. Monday. Admission is free, for those who are properly attired.
Nitro Circus, action-sports show, 5 p.m. Sunday, Lawrence-Dumont Stadium, 300 S. Sycamore; $19 to $79; nitrocircus.com.
Wichita Wingnuts vs. Laredo Lemurs baseball, 6:05 p.m. Monday, Lawrence-Dumont Stadium, 300 S. Sycamore. The stadium is serving $1 hot dogs and soft drinks. Vouchers for $1 general admission tickets are available at area Kwik Shop locations. Otherwise, admission is $6 to $13 in advance, $8 to $15 day of game (children 2 and under free). Most towns will be having fireworks displays on July 4. Among them:
Red, White and Boom downtown Wichita Fourth of July celebration with music, food trucks and drinks starting at 5 p.m., Hyatt Lawn, 400 W. Waterman; free admission; BOB-FM radio music from 5 to 6:30 p.m., the Astronauts band at 7 p.m., fireworks at about 9:45 p.m. over the river and on barges in the river.
City of Derby Independence Day Celebration & Fireworks, kids’ activities, free ice cream, food available for purchase, plus fireworks, starts at 7 p.m. Monday, High Park, 2801 E. James, Derby.
Park City’s Salute to Freedom, 9 a.m. to 10 p.m., Hap McLean Park, 6801 N. Hydraulic. Parade at 9 a.m., followed by a car show, inflatables, games with prizes, face painting, a horseshoe tournament and a pet show. There will be free ice cream at 10:30 a.m. and watermelon at 1 p.m. From 6 to 10 p.m. choose between a stage featuring a magician or live music on the concert stage. It ends with fireworks at 10 p.m.
