Father’s Day Fun

Families looking for last minute Father’s Day plans – fear not. A few local venues have you covered. The Sedgwick County Zoo will is putting on a car show on Sunday, with classic and antique cars on display, as well as regular zoo activities. Dads get in for free, as long as they are accompanied by a paying child. Old Cowtown Museum will have gunfights throughout the day for fathers and families to watch, and all dads get in for free. And Belle Plaine’s Bartlett Arboretum is offering a concert by Austin troubadour Jimmy LaFave. Picnics are welcome, and barbecue and Italian food will be sold on-site.

Curtis Salgado after-work party

The smooth stylings of Curtis Salgado will float through Crown Uptown Theatre on Wednesday as he headlines the first in a series of after-work party shows scheduled for 2016. Salgado, who has been playing since the 1960’s, is an award-winning vocalist and harmonica icon. Salgado fronted his own group, “The Nighthawks,” but was an inspiration John Belushi and is said to have influenced the creation of “The Blues Brothers.”

Juneteenth celebration FREE ALERT

Wichita’s annual Juneteenth celebration will conclude on Saturday with a day of fun at McAdams Park. Activities include candidate forums, a three-on-three basketball tournament, a poetry slam, local entertainers, food and merchandise vendors and fitness activities. The day will end with a movie in the park. The celebration is centered around June 19, or Juneteenth, which marks the day in 1865 that slaves in Galveston, Texas, were emancipated. It’s observed by African-American communities across the country.

Dancing on the Square FREE ALERT

A Step Ahead Dance Studio will fill the Old Town Square Friday with its dance social for the public. The music played will range from swing to Latin to ballroom, and a free group lesson will be included. A partner is not required and the dancing will continue at Oeno Wine Bar, 330 N. Mead, after the event concludes.

Return of Sketch at the Orpheum

The Orpheum Theatre on Friday will be filled with laughter and fun as the sketch comedy show “SOS 2: Return of the Sketch” takes the stage. Every audience member will be involved in the action and will be seated onstage alongside the sketch performers. Attendees can purchase VIP packages for front-row seating and guaranteed use of their name in the show.

In this Moment at the Cotillion

Metal bands In this Moment and Hellyeah will headline a show at the Cotillion on Sunday that also will include Shaman’s Harvest and Sunflower’s Dead. In this Moment is known for its female lead singer, Maria Brink, and it’s single “Sick Like Me.” Hellyeah, a groove metal band, is fresh off the release of its new album “Blood for Blood.”

Ape Awareness

This weekend, the Sedgwick County Zoo welcomes ape addicts to increase their knowledge at its annual Ape Awareness event. It will include information on the three types of apes that live in the Sedgwick County Zoo: gorillas, chimpanzees and orangutans. There will be activities for all age groups and ape merchandise on sale, and all proceeds will go toward ape conservation projects.

Coin and Stamp show FREE ALERT

The Kansas Numismatic Association is putting on its 33rd annual coin and stamp show at the Cessna Activity Center this weekend. There will be 50-60 coin and stamp dealers at the show, and attendees can buy, sell and trade coins and stamps throughout the day.

Gooding at Barleycorn’s

Gooding, a rock n’ roll band from Kansas that’s now based in Los Angeles, is making a stop in its home state Friday at Barleycorn’s. The band, which has played in 48 states in the United States as well as internationally, has music in the soundtracks for “Iron Man 2,” “Walk the Line” and “Ice Age 2” along with various commercials. Gooding infuses indie rock, Americana and blues to create a modern day rock ‘n’ roll sound of its own.

Gordon Lightfoot at the Stiefel

Celebrating his 50-plus year career, Gordon Lightfoot will make a stop Saturday at the Stiefel Theatre on his “The Legend Lives On” tour. With classic hits like “Early Morning Rain” and “If You Could Read My Mind,” Lightfoot has international sales in the multi-millions. The summer tour will include classic hits along with deep-track songs for die-hard Lightfoot fans.

Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve anniversary FREE ALERT

Nature enthusiast can spend the day at the Wildflower and Butterflies event this weekend at the Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve to celebrate its 20th anniversary as well as the National Park Services 100th anniversary. The event will offer opportunities for families to learn more about Kansas’ natural history and bus tours of the prairie will be given by park rangers at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. each day of the event. There will be nature walks and more, and the festivities will go on, rain or shine.
