Readers respond with photos, tales of Dad’s special chair

Arthur Gould George Sheeks bought the “Chair” in 1992 and had it for eight years. After his death the chair was passed on to my father, Arthur Gould. For 12 years it was used by my father with my nephew, Dylan, as seen in the picture from the family room to the computer room sharing time as Dylan got older. Last four years it is up for grabs by anyone willing and able to navigate the stairs to the basement family room where it has earned a rest. The “Chair” will be 24 years and 3 months old Father’s Day. Father’s Day will be my parent’s Arthur & Renate Gould’s Wedding Anniversary. George Sheeks bought the “Chair” three months before his and Georgia’s Golden Anniversary. Arthur & Renate Gould had the “Chair” on their Golden Anniversary. My Husband and I are over halfway to a Golden Anniversary. The “Chair” awaits. – Karol Schott

Little Remy Elzein, 2, won’t take a nap at home.

But when she’s snuggled up with grandpa Steve Cohlmia in the “King’s Chair” – which is several weekend afternoons a month – she’s out. And so is grandpa.

“He has the magic touch,” said Cohlmia’s daughter and Remy’s mom, Leigh Elzein.

In honor of Father’s Day, we asked readers to send in pictures of the fathers in their lives with their special chairs, and many men have them. They’re that one piece of furniture that the rest of the family knows to stay away from unless he’s not home.

We got dozens of responses that included cherished pictures and heartwarming stories. Some of the stories associated with the special recliners, rockers and wingbacks were decades old. Others came from new traditions, like Cohlmia’s weekend naps with Remy, which he’s recently expanded to include her baby sister, Mira.

A panel of judges chose Cohlmia’s picture as winner. His daughter, Leigh, who submitted it, is keeping the win a secret until Father’s Day. She can’t wait to see him open the paper on Sunday morning and find himself and his beloved leather recliner, dubbed the King’s Chair by his family, pictured. Leigh will receive a $100 gift card, which we’re confident she’ll spend pampering her father.

Happy Father’s Day to all fathers. May your families let you sit wherever you want for however long you want today.
