The city has burst into color, the sun stays high in the sky well past 8 p.m., and the weather is still temperate – for Wichita, at least. What better time to explore the city outdoors? Now is the opportune moment, as Wichita celebrates the last week of National Bike Month.
This Saturday, in tandem with its Family ArtVenture series, the Wichita Art Museum will host its Bike Blitz. Traverse the city’s bike lanes to the Arkansas River and continue over to the museum for bike decorating, giveaways and free admission to the museum.
WAM will provide construction and tissue paper, pompoms and other decorations to glitz up bikes for summer. Giveaways throughout the afternoon will include bells, streamers and other bike accessories. Visitors can stop by between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. to take part in the free activities.
Organizers hope the weather will cooperate this year.

“The past two years we’ve been rained out,” said Teresa Veazey, the museum’s public relations manager.
“We’re keeping our fingers crossed that it won’t rain this year. We’ll take our chances.”
If it does rain, the museum has a back-up plan in place: In the case of inclement weather, “Pee-wee’s Big Adventure” will be shown at 1 p.m., and bike decorating will continue indoors.
In addition to celebrating National Bike Month, WAM hopes the event, and its free monthly Family ArtVenture program, will help draw more families to the museum.
“Lots of parents say, ‘I don’t know anything about art,’” Veazey said.
“You don’t have to know anything (about art). Just ask your child, ‘What do you think is happening in this painting?’ You don’t have to have a degree in art history to like art. Kids have opinions about these things. Talking about art is a way for families to connect.”
WAM’s new exhibit, “Chihuly Drawings,” which opened on May 21 and continues through Sept. 11, Veazey said, is an exemplary exhibit for introducing children to art. Artist Dale Chihuly’s whimsical and multi-colored geometric drawings in pencil, charcoal and acrylic leave much open to interpretation for young imaginations.
For those who want to make a day out of it, the museum’s Muse Cafe, is open 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. with plenty of kid-friendly options, such as peanut-butter-and-jelly sandwiches and milk.
