‘Transformers,’ ‘Doctor Who,’ ‘SpongeBob SquarePants’ among titles for Free Comic Book Day 2015

Free Comic Book Day is months away, but an announcement Wednesday revealed the 50 free comic books that will be available during the event at participating shops worldwide.

Titles for Free Comic Book Day 2015 include “Marvel’s Secret Wars,” “Transformers,” “Doctor Who,” “SpongeBob SquarePants,” “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles,” “Street Fighter,” “Sonic the Hedgehog” and “Fight Club,” written by Chuck Palahniuk, according to a news release from the selection committee.

Free Comic Book Day, scheduled for May 2, is an annual industrywide outreach event aimed at introducing the world of printed comics to a generation that has grown up with the characters in movies, cartoons, video games and television shows. In addition to giving away comics, participating stores often offer contests, door prizes and meet-and-greet events with comic book creators.

In Wichita in past years, participating stores have included Prairie Dog Comics, 4800 W. Maple, and Wizards Asylum Comics & Games, 1309 W. 31st St. South.
