August’s reel rebels: More alternative films on the way

August’s only halfway done, and the alt-film scene is still rolling out fresh screenings and events. Here’s what’s coming up (titles and times subject to change):

ORPHEUM THEATRE ANNIVERSARY FILM SERIES

Anniversary Film Series: Dog Day Afternoon (1975) — August 1972. Brooklyn swelters. Three would-be bank robbers walk in expecting an easy score. Minutes later, the plan unravels into chaos — a hostage standoff, a media circus, and a day spiraling into madness. Winner of the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay and featuring one of Al Pacino’s most electrifying performances. Showing at 7 p.m., Aug. 21. $12.26 (plus taxes/fees), $11.04 for students, seniors, and military.

Knitflix & Chill: “Clueless” (1995) – Bring your knitting, crocheting, or any mess-free craft and settle in for an afternoon of handmade magic and feel-good flicks. No yarn? No problem! Harvester Arts will have yarn, crocheting supplies and wine available in their space from 5:30 to 7 p.m, followed by a screening of “Clueless.” The comedy follows shallow, rich and socially successful high schooler Cher (Alicia Silverstone), who takes it upon herself to be a matchmaker. 7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 15. $15 plus fees.

The Record Ship Presents: “Best Worst Movie” (2009) – This documentary takes a look at the making of the film “Troll 2” (1990) and its journey from being crowned the “worst film of all time” to a cherished cult classic. Well, “cherished” might be a strong word. 4 p.m. Sunday, Aug 17. $8 plus fees.

Tallgrass Back to Class(ics): “Billy Madison” (1995) — Adam Sandler plays a spoiled rich kid forced to redo grades 1–12 (two weeks each) to inherit his dad’s hotel empire. 7 p.m. Aug. 22. $12 plus fees. Harmons and Hollywood Presents: “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs” (1937) — Fairest of them all? Not if the wicked Queen has her way! Follow Snow White as she escapes into the forest, befriends seven lovable dwarfs, and tries to stay one step ahead of her jealous, evil stepmother. 4 p.m. Aug. 24. $8 plus fees.

Tallgrass Back to Class(ics): “Dangerous Minds” (1995) — In the heart of a struggling California high school, a retired Marine steps into a classroom where trust is scarce and hope is in short supply. Michelle Pfeiffer delivers a gripping performance as she fights to break through walls of resistance, prejudice and hardship to reach her students. 7 p.m. Aug. 28. $12 plus fees. Tallgrass Back to Class(ics): “Easy A” (2010) — Olive (Emma Stone) is just your average high school nobody, until one tiny white lie explodes into a full-on rumor mill feeding frenzy. Armed with wit, sarcasm and some seriously bold fashion choices, she turns scandal into social currency. 7 p.m., Aug. 29. $12 plus fees. Tallgrass Back to Class(ics): “High School Musical” (2006) — When a hoops star (Zac Efron) and a brainiac (Vanessa Hudgens) land leads in the school musical, sparks fly, songs soar and the status quo hits a high note of chaos. 3 p.m., Aug. 30. $8 plus fees. Sunday Scaries: The Faculty (1998) — Something is wrong at Herrington High. When a student photographer (Josh Hartnett) sees a nurse brutally killed and then walking the halls alive, he’s plunged into a nightmare of paranoia, possession and terror. 4 p.m., Aug. 31. $8 plus fees.

Back to Hogwarts Marathon — Dust off your robes and polish your wands! In honor of back-to-school season, Regal will host an eight-day magical journey through all of the Harry Potter films, Aug. 23–30 — one chapter per day, in order. Tickets are $9.75. See website for showtimes.

“The Conjuring” Universe Marathon – Leading up to the release of “The Conjuring: Last Rites” on Sept. 5, Regal is showing all eight films in the series in chronological order (not in the order they were released, since some were pre-quels to the original “Conjuring”), from Aug. 18 to Sept. 3.
