Things heat up with Wichita alternative film events in July

Looking for a way to escape the heat outside? Well, head inside for some adventurous alternative film offerings. Here’s a look at what’s ahead in July (titles and times are subject to change):

BOULEVARD THEATRES

“Bury Me When I’m Dead” (2025) – After failing to keep his wife’s dying wish, a series of tragic events leads a man to believe she has returned to get revenge. This is a special screening of a locally-made film written and directed by Seabold Krebs. Showing at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 9. Tickets are $8. The film is slated for an on-demand release on July 18.

ORPHEUM THEATRE ANNIVERSARY FILM SERIES

Anniversary Film Series: “Tommy Boy” (1995) – After his auto-parts tycoon father dies, an overweight, underachieving son (Chris Farley) teams up with a snide accountant (David Spade) to try and save the family business. 7 p.m., July 17. $8 (plus taxes and fees), $7 students, seniors and military.

EMILY BONAVIA TALLGRASS FILM CENTER

Reverie Impact Cinema: “The Way He Looks” (2014) – Leonardo is a blind teenager dealing with an overprotective mother while trying to live a more independent life. To the disappointment of his best friend, Giovana, he plans to go on an exchange program abroad. But when new student Gabriel arrives at their classroom, new feelings blossom in Leonardo that make him question his plans. 7 p.m. Thursday, July 10. $12 plus taxes and fees. Singer/songwriter Charlie Wilks will perform as guests enter the theater from 6:30 to 7 p.m.

Pridegrass Year Round: “Pee-wee’s Big Adventure” (1985) – Eccentric and childish Pee-wee Herman (Paul Reubens) embarks on a big adventure when his beloved bicycle is stolen. 7 p.m. July 11. $12 plus taxes and fees; free with a 2025 Wichita Pride button. Sponsored by Wichita Pride Inc. and Tallgrass supporter Sarah Snell.

Knitflix & Chill: “Thelma & Louise” (1991) – Susan Sarandon and Geena Davis star as best friends who embark on a short weekend trip that ends in unforeseen incriminating circumstances. As fugitives, both women rediscover the strength of their bond and their newfound resilience. 3 p.m. July 12. $15 plus taxes and fees. Harvester Arts will have yarn, crocheting supplies, and wine available in their space starting at 2 p.m.

Harmons and Hollywood presents: “Bullitt” (1968) – A nonconformist San Francisco cop (Steve McQueen) is determined to find the underworld kingpin who killed the witness under his protection. This thriller includes one of the most famous car chases ever filmed. 7 p.m. July 12. $12 plus taxes and fees.
