Easter weekend has arrived: Where to find egg hunts, other hoppy fun in Wichita
It’s Easter weekend, and you still have plenty of time to find an egg hunt or schedule some face time with the Easter Bunny.
But Easter fun is not the only fun happening around town this weekend. Several big-name celebrities will also be in town for concerts and shows, and Exploration Place will launch its free outdoor movie series.
Here’s a list of some of the fun things happening around town this weekend:
Easter events
Easter weekend has arrived, and although many events happened last week, a few more egg hunts, concerts and parties are scheduled for Saturday through early next week. Lots of local churches and businesses are putting on their own events, but among the big ones on the calendar are:
Easter Eggstravaganza, 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday, Sedgwick County Zoo, 5555 W. Zoo Blvd: The zoo’s hunt invites kids to walk around trying to spot the giant hidden eggs then report how many they saw for a prize. Visitors also will get Easter goodies and a chance to pose for free photos with the Easter Bunny. Activities are free with regular zoo admission.
13th Annual Easter Egg Hunt, 10 a.m. Saturday, All Star Sports, 8333 W. 21st St.: This annual event asks participants to make a $5 cash donation for local charities and to bring their own baskets. The event will include lots of candy plus a raffle with prizes.
The Great Jurassic Egg Hunt, 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday, Field Station Dinosaurs, 2999 N. Rock Road, Derby: This egg hunt is included with paid admission to the dino park and will offer art projects and games. Kinds can bring their own baskets or get limited-edition dinosaur bags at the gate.
Easter Bloomfield Carillon Concert, noon-1 p.m. Tuesday, 204 S. Main: This free lunchtime concert rings out from the fifth-floor clock tower at the Wichita-Sedgwick County Historical Museum and is best heard from Heritage Square Park or on the streets surrounding the museum. Lynne Davis will be the performer.
Return of Kid Rock
Return of Kid Rock, 7:30 p.m. Friday, Intrust Bank Arena, 500 E. Waterman
Rapper and rocker Kid Rock, best known for 1990s hits like “Cowboy” and “Bawitdaba,” last performed at Wichita’s Intrust Bank Arena in 2013, but he’s returning there for a concert that will start at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. Plenty of tickets remain for the show. They start at $35 and go up to $306 and are available at www.selectaseat.com, by phone at 316-755-7328 or in person at the Select-a-Seat box office inside Intrust Bank Arena.
Seinfeld stands up
5 and 8 p.m. Saturday, Century II Concert Hall, 225 W. Douglas
Another favorite 1990s star, Jerry Seinfeld, is also returning to Wichita. Seinfeld, famous for his 1990s and early 2000s sitcom “Seinfeld,” will bring his stand up show to Century II’s Concert Hall for two performances on Saturday, one at 5 p.m. and one at 8 p.m. Tickets are $83 to $107 and available at www.selectaseat.com, by phone at 316-755-7328 or in person at the Select-a-Seat box office inside Intrust Bank Arena or at the Century II Box Office.
Soulja Boy in concert
8 p.m. Saturday, the Cotillion, 11120 W. Kellogg
Rapper Soulja Boy, whose song “Crank That (Soulja Boy)” was a big hit in 2007, is bringing “The Swag Tour” to the Cotillion on Saturday. The star, whose given name is DeAndre Cortez Way, will also have on the tour Nick Gibbs, Trippy Hippy K and DJ3. Doors open at 7 p.m., and the show starts at 8 p.m. Tickets are $20 to $29.50 at thecotillion.com
Last chance for Tulip Fest
10 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday, Botanica, 701 Amidon
Tulip time at Botanica is almost over, and the Tulip Festival, which has been going on the last two Saturdays, will conclude on Saturday of this weekend. Visitors can see around 70,000 tulips in more than 100 different varieties blooming throughout the gardens. The event includes live music, a plant sale, food trucks, crafts, games and free pictures with the Easter Bunny. Hours are 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday. Adult admission is $15 ($12 for members) and youth admission is $10 ages 3 to 11. Ages 2 and under will get in free. Get tickets at botanica.org/tulip-festival
Return of RiverFlix
Dusk, Fridays through Oct. 27, Exploration Place Amphitheater, 300 N. McLean Blvd.
Exploration Place is bringing back its free outdoor movie nights, which will happen Fridays starting this weekend and running through Oct. 17 at the museum’s new outdoor amphitheater. The opening movie is 2016’s “Finding Dory,” which will be followed by “Wicked” on April 25. People are asked to bring blankets and snacks. They also can buy dinner from food trucks, which will open at 6 p.m. The movies are appropriate for all ages and will start at sunset each week. Admission is free.
