‘More Like Jackie’ documentary will be shown this weekend at Wichita’s Orpheum Theatre

It’s the first weekend of February, and Wichita will be full of activity, including the monthly First Friday gallery crawl and a visit from Cirque Du Soleil.

Also, The Wichita Eagle will be screening its new documentary, “More Like Jackie,” at The Orpheum Theatre on Saturday. The film tells the story of the theft of the Jackie Robinson statue from local youth baseball organization League 42.

“More Like Jackie” screening

5 p.m. Saturday, Orpheum Theatre, 200 N. Broadway

The Orpheum Theatre in Wichita will be the site on Saturday of the big screen debut of The Wichita Eagle’s new documentary, “More Like Jackie,” which is about the theft of the bronze Jackie Robinson statue last year from League 42. The theft made national headlines, and the film follows the story of the people affected, including the man who took the statue. The screening, which starts at 5 p.m., will include an opportunity to talk with the filmmakers, League 42 directors and people featured in the film. Cirque du Soleil

Cirque Du Soleil’s show “OVO” will take over downtown Wichita’s Intrust Bank Arena this weekend for five shows that will be staged Friday through Sunday. The show has an insect theme, and acrobats will represent crickets bouncing off trampolines and a spider contorting in its web. Shows are at 7 p.m. Friday, 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. Saturday; and 1 p.m. and 5 p.m. Sunday. Symphony pops: Elton John

7:30 p.m. Saturday, Century II, 200 W. Douglas

Elton John tribute artist Craig A. Meyer will perform along with the Wichita Symphony for its pops concert on Saturday. The show, which will be in Century II’s Concert Hall, is called “Remember When Rock Was Young: The Elton John Tribute.” It will feature songs like “Bennie and the Jets,” “Philadelphia Freedom” and “Crocodile Rock,” and it starts at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $20 to $85 at wichitasymphony.org, the symphony box office or at 316-267-7658.

Winger at The Cotillion

8 p.m. Saturday, The Cotillion, 11120 W. Kellogg

Fans of late 1980s hair metal will be at The Cotillion on Saturday for a show by Winger, whose catalog of hits included songs like “Seventeen” and “Headed for a Heartbreak.” The concert which starts at 8 p.m. and will feature opening act The Dead Aces. Tickets are $42.50 at thecotillion.com. Doors open at 7 p.m.

“Desperate Housewives of Sedgwick County”

Friday-March 22, Moseley Street Melodrama, 234 N. Mosley

Mosley Street Melodrama’s new show “Desperate Housewives of Sedgwick County,” opens on Friday and will run through March 22. The show, written by Carol Hughes, includes a cast of well-known local actors like Julia Faust, Injoy Fountain and Kyle Vespestad. Shows are at 6 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays and at noon on March 8 and March 15. Tickets are $39-$42 for dinner and the show or $27 to $31 for the show only. Get them at www.mosleystreet.com/shows

It’s First Friday

Friday, many Wichita art galleries

It’s First Friday in Wichita, and several local art galleries will be putting on free opening receptions. Among them will be a show in Friends University’s newly renovated gallery space in Riney Fine Arts Center. “Analog & Alternative Photography” is an invitational exhibit that will include photographic work by several local and regional artists and will be on display through March 29.
