The first of the season’s holiday events start happening this weekend in Wichita
When it’s Holiday Tables weekend each year, you know the festive season is about to begin. The annual event will celebrate its 57th installment this weekend and happens at Mark Arts. It’s just one of many fun events happening around town this weekend.

Holiday Tables 57
10 a.m.-4 p.m. Friday-Saturday, noon-4 p.m. Sunday, Mark Arts, 1307 N. Rock Road
The 57th Holiday Tables event, which features decorated holiday tables on display plus an art boutique and bake sale, happens this weekend at Mark Arts. The event, which is appropriate for ages 8 and up, happens from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday and Saturday and from noon to 4 p.m. Sunday. Tickets are $12 a person at markartsks.com/holiday-tables/
Relive the Eagles
7:30 p.m. Saturday, The Orpheum, 200 N. Broadway
Fans of the Eagles can relive the band’s glory days at a concert by tribute act HOtel California, which will put on a show called “A Salute to the Eagles.” The show happens at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at the theater in downtown Wichita. Hansel & Gretel opera
7 p.m. Saturday, 3 p.m. Sunday, Century II Concert Hall, 225 W. Douglas
The Wichita Grand Opera will bring the classic fairy tale “Hansel & Gretel” to musical life at two shows this weekend. The performance will follow the story of two hungry children set to the woods to gather strawberries who get lost and end up at a magical house occupied by a wicked witch who wants to eat them. Shows are at 7 p.m. Saturday and 3 p.m. Sunday at Century II’s Concert Hall. Shimmy and Shred
6 p.m. Saturday, TempleLive, 332 E. First St.
The Shimmy and Shred Fest is a unique event scheduled this weekend for TempleLive that mixes the best of burlesque, belly dance, drag and heavy metal into one show. The all-ages show happens at 6 p.m. Saturday at the concert venue, which is inside the Scottish Rite Temple. Tickets are $30 to $40 at www.templelive.com. The show is open to all ages, and doors open at 5 p.m.
‘First Cat in Space’ signing
11 a.m. Monday, Exploration Place Dome Theater, 300 N. McLean
Watermark Books and Exploration Place are teaming up to welcome author Mac Barnett and illustrator Shawn Harris for a discussion and signing of their new book, “The First Cat In Space and the Wrath of the Paperclip” — the third of the “First Cat In Space” graphic novel series. During the event, which will happen at 11 a.m. Monday in the Dome Theater at Exploration Place, the duo will talk about the book and sign copies afterward. Tickets come with a copy of the book. They’re $17 and include a book. Tickets that include a plus-one entry are $23. They’re available at exploration.org
Adult Spelling Bee
6:30 p.m. Friday, Advanced Learning Library, 711 W. Second St
How’s your spelling? Find out at an adult spelling bee that will happen at 6:30 p.m. Friday at the Advanced Learning Library. The event, designed for laughs and friendly competition, will feature teams of one to four grown up contestants competing in a single-error elimination rounds of increasing difficulty. The top 3 teams will win a prize and bragging rights. Registration is free but required at www.wichitalibrary.org or at call 316-261-8500. On-site registration also will be open from 5:30 to 6:15 p.m. the night of the event.
