November local film events feature fan favorites and all-Indigenous film festival

November kicks off with lots of alternative film events to please local cinephiles. Here’s a look (titles and times are subject to change).

Anniversary Film Series: “Gaslight” (1944)— Ten years after her aunt was murdered in their London home, a woman returns from Italy in the 1880s to resume residence with her new husband. His obsessive interest in the home rises from a secret that may require driving his wife insane. Starring Ingrid Bergman, Joseph Cotton and Angela Lansbury. Showing at 7 p.m. Nov. 21. Tickets are $8 and $7 for students, seniors and military.

“Head of State” (2003) — Chris Rock co-wrote, directed and stars as a low-level Washington, D.C., public servant who is thrust into the national spotlight when he’s asked by the head of the Democratic Party to run for president after the party’s presidential and vice-presidential nominees are killed in a plane crash. 7 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 2. $10 plus taxes and fees.

“Idiocracy” (2006) — An ordinary man is selected for a top-secret hibernation program but is forgotten and left to awaken in a future so incredibly moronic that he’s easily the most intelligent person alive. 10 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 2. $10 plus taxes and fees.

“Madame Mae presents “American Psycho” (2000) — Christian Bale is deliciously wicked as a wealthy New York City investment banking executive who hides his alternate psychopathic ego from his co-workers and friends as he delves deeper into his violent, hedonistic fantasies. 7 p.m. Nov. 8. Preceded by a live-performance drag show. $15 plus taxes and fees.

VHScape presents “Pulp Fiction” (1994) -- A burger-loving hit man, his philosophical partner, a drug-addled gangster’s moll and a washed-up boxer converge in this sprawling, comedic crime caper directed by Quentin Tarantino. 7 p.m. Nov. 9. $5 plus taxes and fees.

“The Gray Fox” (1982) — A genial and charming Old West bandit is released from prison in 1901, entering a world unfamiliar to him, so he returns to the only thing that gives him purpose: robbery. 4 p.m. Nov. 10. $7 plus taxes and fees.

Reel Cultured ICT presents “Lady Snowblood” (1973) -- A young woman is trained from birth to be a deadly instrument of revenge against the swindlers who destroyed her family. 7 p.m. Nov. 15. $10 plus taxes and fees.

“Who Is Stan Smith?” (2022) — This documentary explores the extraordinary life of Stan Smith, the tennis champion-turned-fashion icon and humanitarian. $10 plus taxes and fees. Ticket proceeds will help raise funds for the historic Dunbar Theatre. 7 p.m. Nov. 16. $10 plus taxes and fees.

Gate Record Store presents “Alucarda” (1977) — After the death of her parents, a young girl arrives at a convent and brings a sinister presence with her. Is it her enigmatic imaginary friend, Alucarda, who is to blame? Or is there a satanic force at work? 8 p.m. Nov. 16. $10 plus taxes and fees.

Madame Mae presents “The Silence of the Lambs” (1991) — A young FBI cadet (Jodie Foster) must receive the help of an incarcerated and manipulative cannibal killer (Anthony Hopkins) to help catch another serial killer, a madman who skins his victims. 7 p.m. Nov. 22. Preceded by a live-performance drag show. $15 plus taxes and fees.

Harmons & Hollywood present “Oliver & Company” (1998) — This animated tale follows a lost and alone kitten who joins a gang of dogs engaged in petty larceny in New York City. 7 p.m. Nov. 23. $10 plus taxes and fees.

AlterNative Film Festival — This will be the third edition of the film festival featuring films made by or about Indigenous people from across the United States and Canada. The program includes short and feature-length narratives and documentaries from a variety of genres, including drama, comedy and animation. For a full schedule, see www.AlterNativeFilmFestival.org. “John Wick” — The explosive first film of the iconic action franchise returns to theaters for its 10-year anniversary with an exclusive sneak peek at the upcoming Wick franchise spinoff, “Ballerina.” Keanu Reeves stars as a retired assassin who seeks vengeance after thugs steal his car and kill his puppy. Nov. 3 and 6.
