Who is the donor offering $1 million reward for stolen ‘Wizard of Oz’ slippers?
An anonymous donor has decided there is no place like home for a stolen pair of ruby red slippers Judy Garland wore in “The Wizard of Oz.”
The donor has offered a $1 million reward as the theft approaches its 10th anniversary from a museum in Minnesota where Garland is from. There are three other pairs remaining, including one pair in the Smithsonian Institution in Washington.
The donor is purportedly from Arizona and a huge fan of Garland and the 1939 movie. So which Arizona citizen could the anonymous donor be?
4) Alice Cooper. He’s always loved makeup and accoutrements and also famously helped entrap Wayne and Garth of “Wayne’s World” during a concert in Aurora, Ill. so it wouldn’t be a complete stretch if Cooper was the hidden identity behind the new $1 million reward.
3) Muhammad Ali. In order to fly like a bird, this boxing legend and cultural icon had to wear some spectacularly garish shoes of his own. And while they were mostly white and laced high up his leg, according to Google Images, there may have been some reddish strips as well.
2) Joe Arpaio. The famously harsh sheriff of Maricopa County and Phoenix has a known affinity for law and order. He has spent inordinate amounts of energy trying to deport illegal immigrants, so it would be no surprise if he also tried to return Dorothy’s Kansas-grown slippers back home where they belong.
1) George Takei. The “Star Trek actor” is a longtime LGBT activist and Judy Garland has been a gay celebrity icon since before that phrase had any meaning. Plus, after years of needing to be beamed places, he knows how important it is to have your magic slippers on you, for instance, while taking a stroll in a poisonous garden on another planet.
