What to do in Wichita this weekend: Bowl like The Dude, catch a concert, see some art
August marches on in Wichita, and those fatigued by back-to-school can find plenty of ways to blow off steam this weekend, from attending a dude-worthy bowling fundraiser to visiting new art shows to catching some live music.
Here are some of the fun events happening in and around Wichita this weekend:
Dudegrass returns
6-9 p.m. Saturday, Northrock Lanes, 3232 N. Rock Road
Tallgrass Film Association is bringing back its Dudegrass fundraiser for the first time since the pandemic, and it happens on Saturday at Northrock Lanes. The event, a celebration of the 1998 film “The Big Lebowski,” will feature unlimited bowling and shoe rental and a screening of the movie. It will also include White Russians for purchase, a pizza buffet, a photo booth and more. The event is from 6 to 9 p.m. General admission tickets are $30 and can be purchased in advance at tfamember.eventive.org or at the door. All proceeds go to the Tallgrass Film Association.
Three Days Grace
7 p.m. Saturday, Wave, 650 E. Second St.
Rock band Three Days Grace is bringing its Explosions tour to Wichita’s Wave venue for an all-ages show on Saturday. The Canadian group is best known for songs like “Animal I Have Become,” “I Hate Everything About You,” “Riot” and more. The band will perform at 7 p.m. on Wave’s outdoor stage. General admission tickets are $37 and can be purchased at waveict.com
Cowtown Throwdown
4-9 p.m. Saturday, Old Cowtown Museum, 1865 Museum Blvd.
Old Cowtown Museum is putting on its Third Annual Cowtown Throwdown event this weekend, which will include gunfights, dancing, food trucks, period actors and live music from local bands including Kapybara Music, Big Red Horse and event co-organizers Mountain Deer Revival. The event is open to all-ages and is from 4 to 9 p.m. on Saturday at the Old Cowtown Museum. Day-of tickets are $15 at the gate. Children 10 and under will be admitted free.
Art Together event
10 a.m.-noon Saturday, Mark Arts, 1307 N. Rock Road
Mark Arts’ monthly Art Together event for August is titled “The Stories We Share,” and the Saturday event will include a story time in the gallery, an art project where guests will create their own “selfies” using symbols that represent who they are, and an educational performance by Wichita War Dancer. The family-friendly event is from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday at Mark Arts. Admission is free.
Veteran art
10:30 a.m.-3 p.m. Friday, Robert J. Dole VA Medical Center, 5500 E. Kellogg
The Robert J. Dole VA Medical Center this weekend is putting on its fourth annual Veterans Art Show, which will feature work by veteran artists in several different divisions, including creative writing, drama, music, painting, photography and more. This year, the show will feature 73 entries by 32 veteran artists. The winning entries will go on to compete in the 42nd National Veterans Creative Arts Festival in St. Louis. The artwork will be on display from 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Friday at the center.
Silversun Pickups in concert
8 p.m. Sunday, TempleLive, 332 E. First St.
Los Angeles-based alternative rock band Silversun Pickups will be in Wichita for a concert this weekend. The band, known for songs like “Lazy Eye,” “Panic Switch,” “Kissing Families” and more, will headline a show that starts at 8 p.m. Sunday at TempleLive. Doors open at 7 p.m., and the opening acts will be Me Like Bees and The Cavves. Tickets range from $32.50 to $49 and can be purchased at wichita.templelive.com
