What to do this weekend: Catch a concert, fly a kite, celebrate Blackbear Bosin

The first weekend of June has arrived, meaning that the Wichita Riverfest is in full swing. But if you’re looking for something else to do this weekend and into next week, you have plenty of options.

Here are some of them:

Concert under the trees

4 p.m. Sunday, Bartlett Arboretum, 301 N. Line St., Belle Plaine

The Bartlett Arboretum in Belle Plaine continues its Treehouse concert series this weekend with a show by the Parker Millsap Band, which will perform songs from Millsap’s newest release “Be Here Instead.” Millsap is an Oklahoma native who is best known for his songs “Hades Pleads,” “Old Time Religion” and more. Doors will open at 3 p.m., and the concert will start at 4 p.m. on Sunday. There will be food vendors inside the Arboretum, and attendees also can pack picnics. Tickets are $15 and can be purchased at the door. Kids are free when accompanied by an adult.

Mystery Theater

Weekends through July 2, Prairie Pines Playhouse, 4055 N. Tyler

Prairie Pines Playhouse has just introduced a new “mystery theater” production called “Lost to Space: The Young and the Weightless,” which was written by local theater legends Tim and Karen Robu. The show continues through July 2 at the venue, and attendees can enjoy it over a three-course meal that also includes a specialty drink menu and a full bar. Shows are scheduled for 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday plus June 11, June 17-18, June 24-25 and July 1-2. Dinner plus the show is $38.95, and show only tickets are $20. Tickets are available at prairiepinesplayhouse.com. Non alcoholic drinks are included with the ticket price. Alcoholic drinks are an additional charge.

Kite & Bike Fest

1-4 p.m. Saturday, High Park, 2801 E. James St., Derby

The Derby Recreation Commission is putting on its annual Kite and Bike Festival on Saturday. It invites people of all ages to build and fly their own kites, participate in bike activities, play games and enjoy food. The festival is from 1 to 4 p.m. at High Park. Admission is free.

Steve Earle and The Dukes

8 p.m. Thursday, The Cotillion, 11120 W. Kellogg

Steve Earle and The Dukes are coming to Wichita to perform on Thursday. Earle, a Grammy Award winner, is best known for songs like “Copperhead Road” and “Guitar Town.” His opening act will be The Whitmore Sisters. Doors will open at 7 p.m., and the concert will start at 8 p.m at The Cotillion, 11120 W. Kellogg St. Tickets are $29.50 and can be purchased at thecotillion.com.

Wheeler Walker Jr. in Wichita

8 p.m. Saturday, TempleLive, 332 E. First St.

Wheeler Walker Jr., the controversial alter ego of comedian Ben Hoffman, will be in Wichita this weekend for a show at TempleLive. Walker, who is best known for his explicit, satirical country music songs, will take the stage at 8 p.m. on Saturday. Doors open at 7 p.m. Ticket prices range from $29 to $49 and can be purchased at templelive.com.

Blackbear Bosin dance party

1-8 p.m. Saturday, Mid-American All-Indian Museum, 650 N. Seneca St.

The Mid-America All-Indian Museum is putting on a Blackbear Bosin Social Dance, which is being held in celebration of the 101st anniversary of the birth of famous Comanche/Kiowa artist Blackbear Bosin — the creator of the Keeper of the Plains statue. The dance is from 1 to 8 p.m. on Saturday at the museum and will include dancing demonstrations, songs and kids crafts. Concessions will be available on site, sold by the Native American Elders Council. Admission is free and will include access to the museum.
