What to do in Wichita this weekend: See bull riders, shop and grub, catch some comedy
The lineup of fun events in Wichita this weekend and next week is rather diverse and includes bull riding, concerts, a dance party and a Civil War reenactment.
Here are some of the events Wichitans in need of fun can choose from:
Bull rider battle
7 p.m. Saturday, Intrust Bank Arena, 500 E. Waterman
The Professional Bull Riders Pendleton Whisky Velocity Tour will make its eighth stop at Wichita’s Intrust Bank Arena this weekend. The event, which will feature top bull riders from around the world, happens on Saturday and will feature 40 competing riders. The event starts at 7 p.m. at Intrust Bank Arena, and tickets range from $15 to $100. They’re available at selectaseat.com, by calling 316-755-SEAT or in person at the Select-a-Seat box office inside Intrust Bank Arena.
Four shows, four nights
Friday through Monday, Orpheum Theatre, 200 N. Broadway
It’ll be a busy weekend at Wichita’s Orpheum Theatre, which will host four shows over a four-night period starting on Friday with an 8 p.m. show by country star Jimmie Allen. Then on Saturday, comedian Anjelah Johnson-Reyes, a former pro cheerleader and Internet star, will perform starting at 8 p.m. Sunday’s headliner is another comedian -- stand-up Jo Koy — whose show was originally scheduled for February but was postponed. He also takes the stage at 8 p.m., but the show is sold out. On Monday, former Black Flag front man Henry Rollins will bring his spoken-word tour to the Orpheum for a 7 p.m. show. Shop & Grub returns
11-4 Sunday, Naftzger Park, 601 E. Douglas
Shop & Grub, the big vendor market by FestiveICT that debuted last year at Naftzger Park, will return for the season on Sunday and then will happen on the third Sunday of the month every month until November. The event will include vendors offering vintage clothing, jewelry, food, wine and more plus a bar provided by Wave. Admission is free, and the market lasts from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Civil War weekend
10-5 Saturday, noon-5 Sunday, Old Cowtown Museum, 1865 W. Museum Blvd.
It’s Civil War Weekend at Old Cowtown Museum, which on Saturday and Sunday will feature Civil War reenactments that will include firing demonstrations, skirmishes, cannons and even President Lincoln delivering the Gettysburg Address. The event lasts from 10 a.m. to 5 pm.. Saturday and noon to 5 p.m. Sunday, though the last admissions will happen at 4 p.m. both days. Tickets are $9 for adults, $8 for seniors 62 and older; $7 for ages 12-17, and $6 for ages 5 to 11. Children 4 and under plus active members of the military, educators and Cowtown members will be admitted free. Advance tickets are available at www.oldcowtown.org/
Shinedown in concert
7 p.m. Thursday, Intrust Bank Arena, 500 E. Waterman
Rock band Shinedown, known for hits like “Planet Zero” and “Save Me,” will perform on Thursday at Intrust Bank Arena as part of The Revolution Live Tour. The group’s opening acts will be The Pretty Reckless and Diamante. The show starts at 7 p.m., and doors open at 6 p.m. Tickets are $49.50-$79.50 and available at selectaseat.com, by calling 316-755-SEAT or in person at the Select-a-Seat box office inside Intrust Bank Arena.
Taylor Swift dance party
9 p.m. Saturday, TempleLive, 332 E. First St.
Calling all Taylor Swift fans: at least those over the age of 18. TempleLive, the venue inside the Scottish Right Center in Wichita, will be the site on Saturday of The Taylor Party: Taylor Swift Night, a touring dance party that will include singalongs. Doors open at 8 p.m. and the party starts at 9 p.m. Tickets are $25-$39 at www.ticketmaster.com. Attendees must be 18 or over.
Jasmine Guy at Roxy’s
Actress Jasmine Guy, best known for her role as Whitley in “A Different World,” will appear at Roxy’s Downtown, 412 ½ E. Douglas, from 3-5 p.m. Thursday. Guy will conduct a Q&A and promote her new book, “Afeni Shakur: Evolution of a Revolutionary,” a biography of the mother of rapper Tupac Shakur.
