What to do in Wichita this weekend: Go sledding, hear the symphony play movie scores
Wichita became a winter wonderland this week, and the snowy fun will continue this weekend starting with a day of sledding at the Indian Center.
Those who prefer to stay indoors can hear movie music played by the Wichita Symphony Orchestra, attend an interactive screening of “The Princess Bride” and more.
Here are some of the activities happening in Wichita over the first weekend of February 2022.
Sledding at the Indian Museum
10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Mid-America All-Indian Museum, 650 N. Seneca
Wichitans will be able to sled on the hill at the Mid-American All-Indian Museum on Saturday when the venue teams up with Snow Bros Snowmakers, who will add artificial snow to the snow already on the ground and create a mini-mountain of powder. The event lasts from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., and Sunflower Espresso will be there selling coffee and hot chocolate. The Slope also will be handing out free mittens while supplies last. Participants are asked to bring a nonmetal sled, and adult supervision is required for children under 10. Participants also will need to sign a waiver, which can be found at wichita.gov/ParkandRec.
Symphony music from the movies
7:30 p.m. Saturday, Century II Concert Hall, 225 W. Douglas
The Wichita Symphony Orchestra on Saturday is putting on a pops concert featuring music from some of cinema’s greatest scores, including “Lord of the Rings,” “Pirates of the Caribbean,” “Star Wars” and more. Guest conductor Ron Spigelman will lead the orchestra in the concert, which starts at 7:30 p.m. in the Century II Concert Hall. Tickets are $30, $51 and $85 at wichitasymphony.org/events/movie-music.
Interactive ‘Princess Bride’
Thursday through Feb. 13, Exploration Place, 300 N. McLean Blvd
Exploration Place is putting on interactive screenings of “The Princess Bride” in its Dome Theater starting on Thursday and running through Feb. 13. Participants will become part of the action and will compete in challenges to beat the bandits and protect Buttercup. Screenings are at 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 11 and Feb. 12 and at 3 p.m. Feb. 12 and Feb. 13. Tickets are $15, and VIP tickets that include free popcorn, a drink and priority seating are $25. Exploration Place members get 15% off. Tickets can be purchased at exploration.org.
Social media star
7 p.m. Sunday, The Orpheum Theatre, 200 N. Broadway
Social media star and Oklahoma native Trey Kennedy is coming to Wichita as a part of his “Are You For Real?” tour. Kennedy, who was a top creator on the social media app Vine and who amassed more than 10 million followers on Instagram and Facebook, will appear at The Orpheum at 7 p.m. on Sunday. Doors open at 6 p.m. Tickets range from $39 to $150 and can be purchased at selectaseat.com, by calling 316-755-7328 and at the Select-A-Seat box office inside Intrust Bank Arena.
Nitti Gritti at Wave
7 p.m. Saturday, Wave, 650 E. Second St.
DJ and vocalist Nitti Gritti is coming to Wichita as a part of his “Lets Get Weird” tour. Nitti Gritti earned a Latin Grammy award in 2020 for his contribution to Bad Bunny’s album X 100PRE. His show is at 7 p.m. on Saturday at Wave. Tickets are $27 and can be purchased at waveict.com
‘Titanic on the Plains’
Fridays through Sundays through March 19, Mosley Street Melodrama, 234 N. Mosley
Mosley Street Melodrama is opening a new show called “Titanic on the Plains,” a spoof of the popular movie “Titanic.” It opens on Friday and runs Fridays through Sundays through March 19. All Friday and Saturday shows are at 6 p.m. and Sunday shows are at 10:30 a.m. Following intermission, the venue will also offer a musical revue featuring songs about the sun and sand. Local comedy at The Crown
8 p.m. Saturday, Crown Uptown Theatre, 3207 E. Douglas
The Crown Uptown Theatre will be the site on Saturday of the “ICT Comedy Show,” which will feature well-known local comedians as well as up-and-comers. It starts at 8 p.m., and tickets are $25 at crownuptown.com.
