Rising COVID cases force Wichita theatre troupe to postpone two shows, one into next year
COVID-19 is forcing one local theatre company to alter its season, pushing one play back several weeks and another into next year.
Wichita Community Theatre, which operates at 258 N. Fountain, had planned to open the play “Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike” on Jan. 27. But on Tuesday morning, it announced via Facebook that the play would have to be postponed “due to the surge in COVID cases.”
Its new dates are Feb. 24-March 6.
The theater also will have to push back its production of “Our Town” by Thornton Wilder, originally scheduled for March 17-27, into next year, the announcement said.
“As we continue to navigate this new world of pandemic-era theatre making, the safety of our patrons, staff and volunteers will always be our highest priority,” the post read.
“Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike” follows the story of middle-aged sisters who share a home in Pennsylvania and spend much of their time complaining about their lives. Then, their movie-star sister, Masha, arrives with her boyfriend Spike, fueling old feuds. The show won the 2013 Tony Award for Best Play.
