What to do in Wichita this weekend: Concerts, pancakes with Santa, Christmas flicks

Looking for a little fun before the rush to Christmas officially starts? Here are some entertaining activities happening in and around Wichita over the third weekend in December:

Lindsey Buckingham in concert

7 p.m. Saturday, Orpheum Theatre, 200 N. Broadway

Three-time Grammy winner Lindsey Buckingham, the legendary guitar player and singer from Fleetwood Mac, will perform at Wichita’s Orpheum Theatre on Saturday, making up a show originally scheduled for May 2020 that was canceled because of COVID-19. The show starts at 7 p.m., and tickets are $70 to $100 at www.selectaseat.com, by calling 316-755-SEAT or at the Select-A-Seat box office inside Intrust Bank Arena.

Santa’s Pancake Party

8 a.m. Saturday, Exploration Place, 300 N. McLean Blvd.

Santa will visit Exploration Place on Saturday for breakfast with his tiny fans. There are still tickets left for the 8 a.m. slot of Santa’s Pancake Party, which includes a visit with the jolly one, an audience with a live reindeer and a breakfast of pancakes, sausage, fruit and juice. Visitors also can make ornaments, color holiday pictures and check out the museum. Tickets are $20 for adults and $15 for children. Members get a 15% discount. Get tickets at exploration.org

Nest Fest at TempleLive

8 p.m. Saturday, TempleLive, 332 E First St.

Wichita rock band For The Birds will headline Nest Fest, a concert at TempleLive, the venue inside the Scottish Rite Center at 332 E. First St. The show also will include bands Rise Again, Sunset Motel, MJ12 and Left Without Notice. It will be For the Birds’ last show of the year. Doors open at 7 p.m., and the show starts at 8 p.m. Tickets are $10 at www.ticketmaster.com

Opera by Mozart

7 p.m. Friday through Sunday, Friends University Alumni Auditorium, Davis Administration Building, 2100 W. University

Music on Site, a nonprofit dedicated to opera, will present “Die Zauberflote” (“The Magic Flute”), an opera in two acts by Mozart to a German libretto by Emanuel Schikaneder that includes both singing and spoken dialogue. The performances start at 7 p.m. Friday through Sunday at Friends University’s Alumni Auditorium in the Davis Administration Building, 2100 W. University. Admission is free, and no tickets are required, though donations will be accepted. The show’s run time is 2 hours and 45 minutes.

Flea market weekend

9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, Kansas Star Casino, 777 Kansas Star Drive, Mulvane

It’s Wichita Flea Market weekend again, and the big sale — which fills the arena at the Kansas Star Casino in Mulvane on the third weekend of each month — will be set up for last-minute Christmas shoppers on Saturday and Sunday. It will feature more than 200 booths filled with things like antiques, collectibles, comics, artwork, jewelry, toys and more. The hours are 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Sunday. Christmas Mickey and Minnie Mouse will be there from 11 a.m. to noon on Saturday, and The Grinch will make an appearance from 11 a.m. to noon on Sunday. Santa will be there from noon to 1 p.m. both days. A one-day pass is $3, and a two-day pass is $5. Children 12 and under will be admitted for free.

Winter Wonderland Punk Prom

7 p.m. Friday, Odd Fellow Hall, 930 W. Douglas

Indie rock singer and Wichita native Yasmin Nur is putting on her first hometown headlining show on Friday at Odd Fellow Hall, 930 W. Douglas. The show, titled “Yasmin Nur’s Winter Wonderland Punk Prom,” will also feature the bands Social Cinema and cursetheknife from Oklahoma City. The show starts at 7 p.m. and is open to all ages. Tickets are $5.

Classic Christmas movies

7 p.m. Saturday, Naftzger Park, and 3 p.m. Sunday, Orpheum Theatre

Wichitans will have the chance to catch two classic Christmas movies in unique settings this week. On Saturday, they can bundle up in their elfin best for a free outdoor screening of the classic holiday movie “Elf” starring Will Ferrell, which will be shown at 7 p.m. Saturday at Naftzger Park, 601 E. Douglas in downtown Wichita. Attendees are encouraged to bring lawn chairs and blankets. On Sunday, the Orpheum Theatre will be showing “It’s A Wonderful Life,” the 1946 classic starring James Stewart, as part of its 2021 Winter Film Series. It’ll be shown at 3 p.m., and tickets are $8 at www.selectaseat.com or by calling 316-755-SEAT.
