Free screening of Eagle documentary on Father Kapaun scheduled for Thursday at Newman

The public is invited to a special Thursday screening of The Wichita Eagle’s new documentary — “Once Was Lost — The 70-year Search for Chaplain Emil Kapaun.”

The hour-long screening, scheduled for 7 p.m. at Newman University’s Performance Hall, will be attended by filmmaker Travis Heying, writer Roy Wenzl and also by Ray Kapaun, the nephew of the film’s subject.

The film is a follow-up to Heying’s 2009 documentary, “The Miracle of Father Kapaun,” which told the story of Kansas priest Emil Kapaun and his heroic deeds during the Korean War. Kapaun died in a North Korean POW camp in 1951.

The new film documents the discovery of Kapaun’s remains in Hawaii earlier this year and includes interviews with those who helped identify the remains using DNA technology.

The screening starts at 7 p.m. in the Performance Hall, which is on the first floor of Newman University’s DeMattias Hall, 3100 McCormick. Admission is free.
