Wichita radio community also mourning DJ whose career spanned more than four decades

As they mourn the sudden passing of Don Hall, the Wichita radio community is also remembering another local radio legend.

Barry Casey, whose voice was familiar to Wichita radio listeners from the 1970s until the early 2000s, died on Sunday, friends say. He was 64.

Casey, whose real name was Barry Richwine, grew up in Wichita and started his radio career here, said his friend, Jack Oliver, the program director for Entercom Radio. Casey was a member of the Wichita North High School Class of 1973.

He was a DJ for KEYN in the early 1970s and was a pioneering on-air personality for KKRD in the late 1970s. He also had stints on KQAM, KLLS, and 104.5 the Fox.

His local radio career ended in 2008, when he was laid off from 104.5 The Fox, then owned by Journal Broadcasting. He went to work for the TSA, Oliver said, but he continued to do voiceover work in a studio he had set up in his home.

“He was really kind of like a musical historian,” Oliver said. “He really understood music.”

Casey was retired and loved spending time with his pet cats, Oliver said. He just spoke with him on the phone last week.
