Five Wichita date ideas that cost less than $5
Reservations at Newport Grill and tickets to a summer blockbuster make for a happy date, but they don’t make your wallet too happy.
Instead of putting in overtime to afford to take your loved one out this weekend, here are five ideas for dates that cost less than $5.
1. Final Friday with Phlox: Masquerade Edition
Fire dancers will take over Old Town Square at 8 p.m. Friday for a masquerade-style performance. There will be performers dressed in circus attire, flaming poi, swords, fire-breathing, a live DJ and more. I’d be willing to drop a decent chunk of change to check out this show, but Phlox and DCE Entertainment are putting it on for free. So toss a $5 tip to the performers and enjoy and evening of flame-filled fun.
2. Art for your Ears: Charlie Mars
Cozy up on a blanket for an evening outside with musician and storyteller Charlie Mars. The indie folk artist will perform a free concert from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday outside the Ulrich Museum of Art, 1845 Fairmount St., as part of its Art for Your Ears concert series. Spend a few dollars packing a snack bag for the night and cuddle up to Mars’ acoustic melodies.
3. Hawaiian Night at the Pop-Up Beach
Get a little goofy with a limbo contest, hula-hoop competition and Hawaiian-themed dress-up contest from 5 to 8 p.m. Saturday at the ICT Pop-Up Urban Park, 121 E. Douglas, which earlier this summer added a sandy, temporary beach. Funky Monkey Munchies, Lynn’s Curbside Cookout and Big Chill Ice Cream will be selling food and treats throughout the night. Throw on your best tacky tourist shirt and grab a tasty treat to share with your date (there are multiple options under $5). Aloha!
4. Historic Dunbar Theatre End of Summer Bash
All you need to make a date out of the Dunbar’s summer bash is a blanket or lawn chair and a few bucks for hot links or popcorn. The party is scheduled for 5 to 8 p.m. Saturday outside the theater at 1007 N. Cleveland St., which was closed in 1963 and which activists are working to restore. Saturday’s event will have dance performers, live music and more.
5. Free Outdoor Movies
There are three chances to catch outdoor movies at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday – and all of them are free or request $5 donations. Movie In The Alley, 515 E. Douglas, will be showing “The Help.” Movie in the Park, Hap McLean Park in Park City, will be showing “Beauty and the Beast.” And NewMarket Square, 2441 N. Maize Road, will be showing “Storks.” NewMarket Square will have free popcorn, Popsicles and water. Bring a blanket or lawn chairs.
