Festival, parade, scavenger hunt to highlight Wichita Pride weekend
June is LGBT pride month, and Wichita Pride Inc. is helping the city join in the celebration with its Wichita Pride weekend.
The weekend’s events Friday through Sunday will range from a citywide scavenger hunt to a pride parade and festival.
Admission to all events is included with the purchase of a $5 Wichita Pride button, which will be available at the events.
Friday
Find Your Pride photo scavenger hunt, 6-9 p.m., XY Bar, 235 N. Mosley: Teams of four to five people will scour Wichita, completing tasks and challenges while taking photo evidence. The hunt is for those 21 or older, as the tasks range from “mild to wild” and will require one designated driver for each team. Cash prizes and other awards will be given out. The mix-and-mingle starts at 6 p.m, with the actual hunt running from 7 to 9 p.m. Teams and individuals wishing to join a team can register at wichitapride.org. Entry fee is $5 and includes a free pride button.
Wichita Pride Drag Show, 10:30 p.m.-2 a.m., Club Boomerang, 1400 E. First St.: Wichita Pride’s six featured performers will take the stage for an evening of laughter, entertainment and theatrical surprises.
Saturday
Wichita Pride Family Picnic, 11 a.m.-2 p.m., O.J. Watson Park, 3022 S. McLean Blvd.: Cargill and AARP are sponsoring a free family cookout. Bounce houses will be set up, and the picnic will be near the park’s train station and paddle boats. Hamburgers, hotdogs and drinks will be provided.
All-Ages Dance Party, 5:30-9:30 p.m., Mid-America All-Indian Center, 650 N. Seneca: Anyone willing to bust a move is welcome at the T-Mobile and Cargill dance party, which will be inside the Indian center. A DJ booth will be set up and will take requests, and free merchandise will be given out throughout the night.
Sunday
Wichita Pride Parade, 1-2 p.m., Historic Sedgwick County Courthouse, 510 N. Main: The parade will follow a 1-mile route on Central from the courthouse to the Mid-America All-Indian Center. Anyone with a Wichita Pride button can march in the parade. Individuals interested in a vehicle entry need to obtain a permit. Contact parade@wichita.org with questions.
Wichita Pride Festival, noon-6 p.m., Mid-America All-Indian Center, 650 N. Seneca: The festival will include music, comedy and other live entertainment as well as food and drink vendors. LGBT-friendly organizations will be on-site, selling pride gear and merchandise.
