Darryl Starbird back in Wichita

One of the biggest and grandest car shows of the year — the Darryl Starbird Rod and Custom Car show — arrives in Wichita this weekend. Here's what you need to know about it:

1) This is the 53rd year that Starbird, a former Wichita, has brought his show to Wichita. It will feature more than 300 custom cars, street rods, sports cars and antiques competing for awards and cash prizes. A prize of $5,000 will go to the most outstanding vehicle shown for the first time in Wichita.

2) Live entertainment will include Bennie Wheels and his concert tribute to Johnny Cash and Brian Dunning and his Rockabilly Trio. The Texas Bikini Team Girls will make appearances all three days and so will Dennis Gage of TV's "My Classic Car."

3) Among the cars on display will be the famous "Predicta," the bubble-topped creation that brought international recognition to Starbird in 1960 when he entered it in the Oakland Roadster Show. It featured stick center steering, drivability from both driver and passenger sides, push button controls, TV and more.

Show hours are noon to 10 p.m. today, 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday at Century II. Tickets are $16. For more information, call 918-257-8073.
