Chiefs fans react to stadium move as elected officials meet to approve proposal
Monday is a day that will change the Kansas City Chiefs franchise and the Kansas City metro forever.
After years of stadium discussions on both sides of the Kansas-Missouri border, the Kansas Legislative Coordinating Council met Monday to discuss the state’s STAR bonds and an agreement to build a stadium for the Chiefs .
After that meeting, the Chiefs announced their plans to move across the state line and build a new stadium in Wyandotte County.
Chiefs fans have debated the team leaving Arrowhead Stadium since talks began, especially after voters rejected a bond proposal that would fund renovations to the stadium and build a new stadium to replace the Kansas City Royals’ Kauffman Stadium.
Lots of fans and some politicians have differing reasons to oppose such a move by the Chiefs, but others are open to a new stadium and new location for their beloved football team.
Missouri Rep. Mark Sharp, a Democrat, voiced his disapproval over the move, placing blame on former Jackson County Executive, Frank White, former governor Mike Parson and the Chiefs for playing various roles in how the move transpired.
“This crisis did not happen by accident. It was the result of a series of preventable leadership failures,” Sharp said in his statement. In a Facebook post before that statement, Sharp said he has watched his last Chiefs game.
“The current administration allowed an entire regular legislative session to pass before calling a special session - by which point Kansas had already positioned itself far ahead in negotiations. That delay proved costly.”
But fans and other interested parties have taken to social media all day, expressing mixed viewpoints about the move. Here’s some of the chatter on X:
Outspoken former Chiefs offensive lineman Geoff Schwartz voiced his disapproval for the move.
“Do not like,” he posted.
One fan on X wrote, “Let’s be real. The Chiefs were always leaving. No amount of Bribery from our state leadership was going to change minds. Giant, multi-billion dollar corporations don’t give a rats behind about Consumers. They care about their profit margins and if something looks shiny/new.”
Other fans oppose the move because of Arrowhead’s history and tradition, spanning back to 1972.
One fan wrote, “KC has pro sports because of KCMO. Everything else revolves around it and wouldn’t exist without it. Arrowhead has become something akin to Lambeau, Fenway or Wrigley & shouldn’t be so easily discarded for a stadium that looks like every other modern McStadium.”
One fan in favor of the new stadium proposal wrote, “[I]t’s a relief the Chiefs are staying in the metro, the state line is irrelevant. Thankfully they are not going somewhere like St. Louis.”
Another fan posted, “IF they are truly set on leaving Arrowhead, I’m ok with the Legends location. The Jackson County voters really started this ball rolling. The most important part is to get the team healthy/recharged.”
Another person wrote, “I’m really sad we won’t have Arrowhead anymore…I’m sure the new stadium will be amazing, but there’s just no place like HOME.”
Another fan on BlueSky approved the move because of how STAR bonds have been used in the past.
“Financed with STAR Bonds like the other developments at The Legends. Only users will be paying,” they said. “I’m good with it. Good win for The People of The South Wind. Among other things I hope KSHAAA gets to play their football championships there. Go Chiefs!”
