Here’s how Seth Lugo spent Sunday evening as deal with Royals was finalized
Seth Lugo had just stifled the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field when he talked with the media following the Royals’ 8-4 win.
With the Major League Baseball trade deadline days away, Lugo was asked about his future. He was adamant about his desire.
“This is our team, and I’m part of it,” Lugo said. “I want to be here through the thick and thin. It’s a good clubhouse. It’s a good team. We’ve just got to be more consistent and keep playing like we can and we’ll be all right.”
Lugo also noted he and Royals general manager J.J. Picollo had previously had “some conversations.”
Those talks apparently continued as Lugo and the Royals on Sunday agreed to a contract extension that takes his name out of MLB trade rumor mill.
That deal made Royals first baseman Vinnie Pasquantino quite happy. He had publicly expressed his desire to see Lugo remain with the team, and he took to X to celebrate.
Teammate Maikel Garcia ribbed Pasquantino about writing “vamooo.”
“Why are you writing in Spanish?” Garcia asked. To which Pasquantino replied in Spanish: “because it’s more fun.”
While the Royals and his agent were hashing out the final details of the contract extension, Lugo spent Sunday afternoon ... cooking. Well, grilling, to be more precise.
Following the Royals’ win over the Guardians on Sunday, Lugo spent time with his family. Amanda Lugo posted photos of her husband on her Insta story.
“We love a day game around here cause it means this guy is cooking us a yummy dinner,” she wrote.
There’s little doubt Lugo knew the deal was either finalized or nearly done when he fired up the grill.
