Jason Sudeikis & ‘Ted Lasso’ co-stars join Mumford & Sons on concert stage in KC

“Ted Lasso” fans got what they wanted when Jason Sudeikis and his castmates, who are currently filming Season 4 in Kansas City, joined Mumford & Sons on a concert stage Thursday night.

The lesson here: Believe.

The British folk rock band, led by Sudeikis buddy Marcus Mumford, co-wrote the “Ted Lasso” theme song.

Sudeikis, Hannah Waddingham, Juno Temple and Brendan Hunt walked onto the stage at the Azura Amphitheater in Bonner Springs, Kansas when the band played the song.

Hunt provided back-up vocals and Waddingham, a powerful singer who has sung on the show, joined Mumford on lead vocals for part of the song.

As the song ended Sudeikis stood at the mic and yelled “Kansas Cit-ayyyyyyyyyyyyyy,” making the rain-drenched audience go wild.

Fans posted photos and videos on social media.

“Casually hung out with the cast of Ted Lasso at a Mumford and Sons show tonight, no biggie,” one fan boasted on X.

The actors have been in town all week filming at various locations around Kansas City. Knowing the band’s connection to the show, fans assumed, rightly so, that a harmonic convergence would occur.

Some fans had also hoped that Taylor Swift, who dates Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce, might pop out, too, given her connection to both Kansas City and the British musicians.

The band worked with Swift on her “Evermore” album, with Marcus Mumford providing vocals for “Cowboy Like Me.” He surprised Swifties during the Las Vegas leg of the “Eras Tour” last year when he performed the song with her.

At their show Tuesday at Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Colorado, the band covered the song with Mumford shouting, “We love you, Tay Tay.”

Sudeikis is a long-time fan of the band. Last month he and Hunt, who plays Coach Beard on the show, attended the band’s Hollywood Bowl concert in Los Angeles, where fans made videos of Sudeikis hopping and singing along in the audience.

By most accounts, Sudeikis and the rocker met in September 2012, when Mumford & Sons made its debut as the musical guest on “Saturday Night Live.” In the same show, they portrayed a Beatles cover band in a skit Sudeikis wrote.

The following year Sudeikis, Jason Bateman, Ed Helms and Will Forte portrayed the band members in the group’s video for “Hopeless Wanderer.”

The story goes that for “Ted Lasso,” which premiered in August 2020, Sudeikis left Mumford a long voice mail message asking if he was interested in collaborating with composer Tom Howe to create the show’s music, including the theme song.

It almost didn’t happen.

It took the singer six weeks to get back to him because he had two cellphones, one for the United States, the other for the United Kingdom. Sudeikis reportedly left the message on the American phone, which Mumford rarely checked, Variety reported in 2021.

“We felt the theme song had to be placed somewhere right in the middle of the Atlantic, between the U.K. and the U.S., so we listened to a lot of Beatles and Gerry and the Pacemakers, and then also Creedence Clearwater Revival, as references, in saying it should feel somewhere halfway between London and Kansas, where Ted’s from,” Mumford told The Hollywood Reporter in 2021.

When Mumford sang the last lyric Thursday night, he shouted to the KC crowd: “Believe!”
