Chiefs fans had to wait a little longer than expected before they learned who Kansas City would be selecting in the first round of the NFL Draft on Thursday night.

That’s the price of success and a deal.

The Chiefs’ floor during the Patrick Mahomes Era has been playing in the AFC Championship Game, so they have gotten used to winning a lot of games — and drafting late.

Although they had the 31st pick overall pick in the NFL Draft on Thursday night, the Chiefs traded with the Eagles and moved back one spot. The Chiefs ended up with the last pick in the first round again following the deal, and they took Ohio State offensive lineman Josh Simmons at No. 32.

Here are highlights of the newest member of the Chiefs.

Scouting reports

Here is what the Athletic’s Dane Brugler wrote about Simmons ahead of the Draft: “Simmons was on pace over the first five games of the 2024 season to be an All-American and looked like a strong contender for OT1 in the draft class, but he suffered a non-contact knee injury in mid-October, which sidelined him for the rest of the season.

“Simmons explodes out of his stance in pass protection and plays with knee-bend, balance and calmness to govern his movements, shoot his hands and stay square to pass rushers. He isn’t an overpowering mauler in the run game, but (Chip) Kelly’s offense highlighted Simmons’ range when executing pulls, reaches, traps, etc. Overall, Simmons is a nimble, coordinated pass protector with tremendous athletic poise and the body control to be a long-term starting left tackle in the NFL.”

NFL.com’s Lance Zierlein wrote this: “An athletic tackle prospect with adequate size and length, Simmons has experience starting on both sides. He suffered a season-ending knee injury in mid-October, so his recovery and timetable for return will need to be vetted. He’s a consistently fluid mover both inside the box and when asked to play in space, and he has the slide quickness to compete against NFL edge speed. He’s more positional than powerful in completing his run-blocking tasks, but he can fit into all schemes.”
