Mike Berry: Get a jump on Christmas spirit

It’s hard to believe that exactly two months from today, we’ll be hauling tattered Christmas wrappings and bows out to the trash. We all complain about the holiday season starting too soon and wearing us out with shopping chores, but we all really enjoy it, truth be told.

Tomorrow, there’s a chance for car guys and gals to get a jump on things and do something nice for someone you’ll probably never meet, but who will be thankful for a long time to come.

It’s the 10th annual Kruz’n for Kids Charity Cruise, the brainchild of my buddy, Cheryl Boyes, who has a heart of gold and some dance moves that have to be seen to be appreciated. She has been gathering toys for the Toys for Tots program sponsored by the local US Marine Corps Reserve as her way of helping kids who otherwise might miss out on the fun of the season.

Cheryl wrote me this.week: “I am frantic with last minute tasks and notes, etc. … but I know once I see all those toys and the Marines take them away — my heart will melt and my soul will be on fire … and then Christmas morning get to experience it all over again.” (She really talks that way.)

So today if you’re out and around and you spot something that would have made your kids or grandkids squeal with delight, why not buy it, toss it in your hot rod and be at the WSU parking lot at 21st and Hillside by 12:30 p.m. tomorrow?

You can join the car caravan headed down to the Westway Shopping Center at Seneca and Pawnee and have some fun with other gearheads. And maybe Cheryl will dance for the crowd. You never know.
