Car show season off to a great start with Cars for Charities opener

Bruce Ricks of Sapulpa, Okla., showed off his rare, beautifully restored 1954 Hudson convertible. This beauty is powered by the legendary Twin-H 6-cylinder engine and rolls down the road smartly on real wire wheels and the period-correct wide whitewall tires. A real head-turner.

Cars for Charities and Century II once again proved a perfect match last week, as some of the finest show cars anywhere greeted the public in a venue that has grown to be an ideal site for the launch of each year’s car show season.

It was the 61st edition of the show, which has gone through several evolutions. You can’t help but wonder what some of those exhibitors from the first few years would think of the quality and variety of vehicles on display this year. Of course, there are a few folks around who can speak to that, having been there.

And that’s the other side of the show: Getting together with old friends who share one driving passion, that of cool cars. We were again privileged to pick a favorite car for an award, which means Galen Esslinger will be getting a full Wichita On Wheels feature story done on his immaculate flathead V-8 1929 Model A hot rod.

The Magnificent 7 competition was fierce, with cars exhibited for the first time in Wichita competing from right here in town to as far away as Sweden.

Here is a sampling of what we saw as we roamed the exhibits with our trusty Nikon in hand. Hope those who couldn’t make the show in person will enjoy a bit of it on this page.
