Top games

Sept. 2

Heights at Carroll: This is a battle of 2010's Class 6A champ (Heights) and the 5A runner-up. Heights shut out Carroll in 2010, while Carroll shut out Heights in '09.

Other games to watch: Buhler at Rose Hill, Northwest vs. Kapaun (at WSU), Derby at Salina Central, Hutchinson at KC (Mo.) Rockhurst, Andover Central at Goddard, Wellington at Andale.

Sept. 9

Andover at Newton: In 2010, Andover had a 22-point second half lead erased against Newton in a game with a long weather delay. Both had two-win seasons: maybe this game will prove these solid programs are on their way back.

Other games to watch: Northwest at Dodge City, Derby at Hutchinson, Rose Hill at Collegiate, Salina South vs. Salina Central.

Sept. 16

Andover Central at McPherson: McPherson beat Andover Central 46-7 in 2010. While QB Ty Matthews is still a Bullpup — he has committed to TCU — this should be a much better game.

Another game to watch: Andale at Rose Hill

Sept. 23

Garden Plain at Conway Springs: Conway Springs is a favorite to win the Class 3A title, but Garden Plain is a contender, too. The Cardinals swept Garden Plain last season.

Other games to watch: McPherson at Goddard, Andale at Collegiate, Garden Plain at Conway Springs, Carroll at Northwest

Sept. 30

Northwest at Heights: Heights put 56 and 55 points on Northwest in the past two seasons. This game could resemble those from 2001-08. During that span, Heights won four games by 21 total points, while Northwest won four by 41 combined.

Oct. 7

Kapaun at Carroll: Will Kapaun finally end its drought against the Eagles? Carroll has beaten the Crusaders 12 straight games.

Other games to watch: McPherson at Gardner-Edgerton, Maize South at Collegiate

Oct. 14

Garden Plain at Hutchinson Trinity: Garden Plain won 14-7 in the first round of district play last season. But with Hutchinson Trinity QB Derek Racette gone, it might not be that close.

Another game to watch: Andover vs. Andover Central

Oct. 21

Andale vs. Trinity Academy (at Circle): Andale squeaked out a four-point win in 2010. Both teams are different this season, though. Can Trinity overcome Andale's talent and tradition?

Oct. 27

Maize South at Andale: These teams should make the 4A playoffs and it's a good measuring stick for Maize South's program. While Andale is a bit of an unknown, count on the Indians being tough to beat by Game 9.

Oct. 28

Hutchinson at Carroll: While Hutchinson beat Carroll in their season finale, Carroll bumped the Salthawks in Hutchinson to get to the Class 5A title game.

Other games to watch: Heights at Derby, Goddard at Maize
